I was surprised that I enjoyed this novel as much as I did. Boyd does a great job of not skimming past the horrors of slavery without making the novel too graphic for more sensitive readers. I thought Eliza was an endearing character and found myself rooting for her success. She was so young and had such a shouldered her family burden on her own.
big thumbs up for teaching me something new (who knew indigo was an important crop).
I found eliza's behavior unbelievable. Being an independent, intelligent, innovative woman, yes, great and impressive. physically touching the mouth of a married man and flirting with him via letters to his cousin...weird and inappropriate.

I thought this was pretty good. Then the last little bit was 5 stars. She’s real! That’s amazing. Way to go!
This is a great historical account of Eliza Lucas who was the first to plant indigo in South Carolina and began a huge export in indigo trade that helped the colonies survive financially. There was a lot to learn here and the author did a great job of turning into an engaging story instead of a boring history lesson.
When her father leaves to advance his military career, sixteen year old Eliza Lucas is left to in charge of the family’s three plantations. As her father mortgages their properties to fund his endeavors, Eliza is driven to earn a profit, prove a woman can run a business, and avoid being forced into marriage. She does all this by challenging traditions and showing compassion. After hearing how much England pays to import indigo, Eliza turns her focus to growing indigo and producing dye. As she encounters obstacles and setbacks, Eliza remains ambitious.
The book is well-written and the story is interested. I really had a difficult time getting into it – probably just a story I don’t strongly care about or can relate to. Sounds like fans of Southern romance loved this one. I’m no history buff, but I was surprised that I (and many more knowledgeable people than me) had never hear of Eliza Lucas. If nothing else, this book did make me want to research her a bit more, especially the next time I’m in Charleston.
