The very slow start to this book had me almost not continuing on with it. But by about midway through it picks up and I'm glad I continued on.  I was also glad to read in the afterword that Eliza's empathy and care for the people that truly helped her on the plantation was not just made up for the sake of the story, but seemed to be a true aspect of her life.

Novel based on the life of Eliza Lucas, who was left in charge of her father's South Carolina plantations as a teenager and made a success of producing indigo dye. Interesting to learn about this smart, strong woman who was enlightened for her time.

I couldn't put it down which has been rare lately. Eliza's story feels very relevant to today. It was beautifully written.
