I think the main thing that drew me in from the beginning is the characters. I didn’t understand why it was called normal people until i actually read it. It’s because they are, genuinely, normal people. They have their flaws and their strengths and they suffer. Connell and Marianne aren’t written like characters, they are written like people. They go through their lives, drifting to and from each other. The love lasts throughout, which is such a human concept. When you fall apart from someone, the feelings and things you had and experienced don't just go away, they stay with you.
I also like how flawed they were. Connell was not a good person and neither was Marianne, and I refuse to believe otherwise. They had good characteristics and did good things, but overall they were not good, but in reality, no one is.
Also, one last thing. The lack of quotation marks is what made this such a good read for me. It felt more natural.

Normal People tells the story of Marianne and Connell, two people who grow close during the final days of secondary school. As they move on to college and careers, the two struggle to make sense of their relationship and their feelings for one another.

This book was very difficult for me to get into. I would mostly dread everytime I would have to read it. I think it’s because it was quite boring and the same things kept happening. The on and off relationship between Marianne and Connell was frustrating sometimes.

The writing style annoyed me as well. Every chapter was a time jump meaning we would miss several months. Which was disorienting. Also the lack of quotation marks bothered me. It was hard to tell when someone was talking and who was talking.

The side-characters were badly developed as in they were mostly one dimensional regarding their personality. Although the conversations felt realistic and were nice to read.

I wouldn’t really recommend it to anyone. It is a very specific audience that would like this sort of book, which I don't think any of my acquaintances are part of.

In conclusion, unlike what it may look like I don’t find this book the worst i have read but it was not in my interest and quite boring in my opinion.

I truely loved this book so much. I liked the unique writing style and I found the characters very loves me. I was rooting for Marianne and Connell the entire time as the grew up together. This book break my heart in many pieces but that just shows how invested I was. I can’t believe I hadn’t read this sooner. This book is definitely one worth the hype!
