Sometimes painfully relatable. As the author is Irish, so are her values and global political views, prepare to be triggered if you don't believe in human rights and socio-economic equality. I all seriousness, lovely read.

tmi but it just so happened that i was hit with a depressive episode while reading this novel and it aggravated my depression lmao.

i adore the writing style. it isn't too embellished nor too plain. the characters are flawed and very real. the miscommunications that jeopardize their relationship make sense. my heart hurts about how mundane and banal these relationships are because people are out there having these exact problems.

my rating is a bit low despite enjoying the book--though enjoying is such a strange word to use since it really stressed me out emotionally--because of the ending. i had hoped that marianne would've healed a bit and not have acted so distrusting of connell.
i had hoped they wouldn't have to go through yet another huge bump in their relationship, but then again, marianne probably doesn't have any money to support herself in new york. i don't know. the fickleness of their relationship makes me so unbearably sad. but i suppose that's the point. their relationship is brittle because sometimes that's just how it is between people even when they're each other's persons.

This was a re-read, and I forgot how much I adore this book ✨🌿 such a beautiful coming of age story that explores how hard it is to love yourself while also trying to love others. Marianne and Connell’s relationship is so complex and layered, and it really adds to the emotion.

I'm not gonna lie, I first picked up this book because I found out the main character's name was Marianne which is the English (and french) version of my name, Mariana, and I never ever see my name anywhere so I felt like this was mandatory reading for me.

I kept going back and forth between 4 and 5 stars but I decided to settle for 5 stars because maybe there were one or two lines that I didn't like as much but that doesn't justify taking a whole star for me because I truly loved this book.

it's so beautifully written, with absolutely stunning lines. this was my first Sally Rooney book and I definitely intend on reading more of them.

but I can definitely see this book not being for everyone because the title is very literal, this is a book about normal people with normal lives, but to me it wasn't boring at all... Sally writes so beautifully that I couldn't find it boring for even a second.

I can't wait to read more from her.

The writing was really engaging and insightful, and the characters also feel engaging at first but unfortunately it feels like it doesn't go anywhere

great book! theres a stylistic choice to not use quotation marks with speech which can be sometimes a little difficult to keep track of but doesn't interrupt the flow of the book really. the pacing and dating use in the chapters is easier to follow if reading the book quite consistently which is something to keep in mind. i read this after watching the BBC adaptation and have to say its very well translated. i find it to be a very raw representation of young relationships without belittling the emotions of being young, acknowledging the importance that comes with any and all relationships we experience especially at a time when emotions are so high and the world feels so small yet so large.
