4.5 Great historical fiction following Gretchen, whose life in the inner circle of the one and only Hitler (aka Uncle Dolf) slowly unravels as she questions if her Nazi father's martyr death was actually murder. She meets a dreamy Jewish reporter named Daniel, and though everything she has been taught makes her want to hide from him in revulsion, she quickly sparks a forbidden romance. Her brother is absolutely terrifying, the action is intense, romance sweet, and even though we all know what Hitler was up to from the beginning, your world crumbles with Gretchen's as she learns the horrifying truth behind it all.
Rating: 4.5; a great storyline, but cheesy romance. Other than that, the book was very enlightening. Very much enjoyed reading this!
What a gripping, meticulously researched, and beautifully-written novel! The author seamlessly blended the terrible facts of this time/place (1931 Munich) with the heart-wrenching fiction of Gretchen and Daniel's fictional story. I was hooked from page one and would've sped along to the end, but I forced myself to slow down to savor the beautiful images and fantastic details. An award-winner for sure!
Intriguing perspective of a German girl who was close to Hitler and comes to realize the horrors of his plans. Very intriguing that real people and events were included in the historic fiction.
I really enjoyed the plot and the history involved in it. I was always intrigued by Hitler's story. I did like Gretchen and her ambition to become a psychoanalyst. I didn't like the romance at all. I would prefer if it was a partnership. Daniel was a decent character, but very clever.
I flew through this gem. So well done, and such richly developed characters and carefully researched historical detail. PLEASE READ THIS BOOK AS SOON AS YOU PHYSICALLY CAN.
history text book or novel you tell me, couldn't get past the writing style which is SO SAD because i was SO EXCITED for this.
