Just to be clear, I dnfed, but I’d passed the 50% mark and thus feel confident in my rating.
This book was bad, and by bad I mean contrived, convenient, & underdeveloped. Even though the author definitely knew how to physically describe a man in a *coughs politely so that anyone who knows or is related to me can skim forward* sexually appealing way, the plot, the emotions, the actual romance, & the arcs were terribly written. The romance came off as awkward and love-at-first-sight-out-of-the-clear-blue-y. It read like bad fanfiction.
Call me crazy but if I don’t buy the romance or the main character, I can barely enjoy even the fun aspects of a romance, and the plot did no favors. Oh, and one review from a hurricane veteran mentioned the poor research done on hurricanes, despite that being the setting.

I love the instant connexion between Bree & Drew- and I gotta say I love how he calls her Freshwater 🥰 the longing & mutual pining was so good it diverted me from it being a slow start into business- the rescuing of people’s animals.

I like every Meg Cabot book I've read (with the exception of the "Boy" series). This wasn't my absolute favorite, but it was a fun and quick read. Plus, it touched on #MeToo themes and consent, which made it a little more substantial. Overall, happy to have a new Meg Cabot book in the world!

I was hoping for a fun light read, which is sort of what I got. This was a cute book in many ways, and I actually thought the romance (which is really the main point) was done well. It hit a lot of satisfying/fun tropes and didn't fall into some of the ones I find more irritating.
But the pacing was so weird, this big leadup to the hurricane and then the aftermath felt so wrong. And the big buildup to some aspects of Bri's personal life that were then handled so quickly and just way too pat.
Lastly, maybe some people will appreciate it, but there is a big scene near the end that is played as if it is supposed to be some big empowerment moment of Bri that I found genuinely appalling. I was also appalled at her callous disregard for emergency preparedness and her willingness to put her own life in danger and add unneeded load to an already-stressed system to ride out a Cat 5 hurricane out of sheer stubbornness, but at least this decision was portrayed in a bad light in the book. Not so with this other one. Left a very bad taste in my mouth.

I'm referring to her drawing a loaded gun, removing the safety, and pointing it at another person. Yes, he is a person that sexually assaulted her. No, that is NOT OKAY. Seriously.laurentv's review against another edition

I am sincerely torn on this one. It is definitely an extremely quick read, but the pacing feels a little too urgent (especially in the last 60 pages or so). The setting is really good (which I think Cabot was banking on considering the setting is the basis for her new series), but the plotting just feels a bit-thin and convoluted at the same time.
Closer to 2.5 stars.
