Is this book a literary masterpiece? No. There are some minor continuity issues (like Bree “texts” her landlord but then the landlord responds to her “voice mail”) and some bigger plot issues (like a majority of residents not evacuating a Category 5 hurricane for very inane reasons).

But it was still overall an enjoyable read if you can employ some suspension of disbelief. One of my favorite things about this entire book is that Drew lets Bree deal with her issues on her terms. He lets her know he’s there for support, but he doesn’t try to take over the situation. More books need that.

This book was a fun & quick read that I finished in a short amount of time and very much enjoyed.

“He likes quirky places, and Little Bridge, with its odd name and even odder residents, is one of the quirkiest.”

“Maybe I was being stubborn, for what felt like the first time in my life. I was standing up for myself, which meant running toward something. I didn’t know what, exactly ... but maybe that’s why I was still here.”

I could see that some of the pink and white blossoms on the frangipani had been sent skittering across the courtyard, piling up against our front door, where they lay like inert ballerinas, their tutus deflated.”

Everything I used to love in a Meg Cabot book but now in group form - witty writing, fun rom com plots and meet cutes, escapism, and laugh out loud funny moments. Bree and Drew were so cute and the concept - saving pets all over the island after a hurricane - was something even this non pet person could get behind. This novel - unlike her YA series - goes into deeper territory with topics like consent, assault, and the aftermath, but in a way that left you feeling empowered rather than beat down. Excited for more in the series!

Spoiler
What did I just read!?

- Sexual Assault: Inaccurate depiction of sexual assault recovery! It takes a long time for you to become comfortable with another person relationship-wise and sexually. In this book, Brie just swooped right into bed with Drew after he confessed his like of her since he met her and they had no problems. Especially with her thoughts on his supposed past of being a player.

- Hurricane: Why would she not evacuate!!! She had so many offers and opportunities!

- Ex-boyfriend: There was a hint in the synopsis that the ex would come to Little Bridge Island at some point but I thought it would be to like to the island and drag Bree onto a plane to get out of the way of the hurricane, or something like that. Instead, he brought the friend who sexually assaulted Bree and tried to convince her that he was doing good and getting his life back in order after a hard time that led to the incident. But, that's not the worst part...she ends up pulling a gun on him and threatening him. I thought she was a little bit of a ball-buster but not a big enough one to pull a gun on someone and threaten their life. LIKE WTF!!!

- Moms: The reunion of Bree with her mom and egg-donor mother was nice but seemed rushed because it happened in the last 5% of the book and Brie had no reservations.

This was my first Meg Cabot book I've ever read. And I loved it! It had charm, quirkiness, love and laughter.

It starts with Sabrina "Bree" Beckham on a little island, Little Bridge Key, Florida. She is going to ride out the storm of the century. She moved to Little Bridge Key to get away from her ex, her mother, and a situation no one should ever have to go through. Bree is currently building a life away from her affluent family and trying to get out of the shadow of her famous judge mother. This story takes place during a massive hurricane, similar to the one that happened last year (maybe two years ago now), Irma. There is mentions of things that I remember the governor of Florida actually saying, "If you are going to stay, please write your social security number on your arm to make it easier to identify you". But Bree is determined to be a native and ride it out, especially with sexy Drew Hartwell, her bosses nephew.

Key things I loved about this book: it was adorably well written and very easy to fall in love with. The characters all had their own personalities and I could see aspects of all of them in my own every day life. We all have some of Bree's friends in our life. Bree and Drew were great together. I like how it wasn't an instant match. They knew each other for a bit of time first, and Bree was definitely warned by her friends to stay away from the heartbreaker. Something else I enjoyed is how Ms. Cabot was able to bring to life in some small ways, the animals that were left behind. We all know that happens IRL as well. Some people are unable to evacuate with their pets, and unfortunate things happen.

A few things I didn't enjoy with the book: The brief mention of what happened to Bree to make her flee her home in New York and how she had no support system. Not one person that would agree that she should be upset by what happened and doesn't need to forgive the jerk that treated her that way. It's mentioned numerous times in the book that she was assaulted, but there is maybe 6 pages that go into detail about what happened and the resolution of it. I'm not sure if I like that. Her situation with her overbearing, but extremely caring, mother. There were times where I felt that I wanted to kick the judge, but there were times that I loved her as well.

I feel that there were times that the pacing of the book could've have been better. This was an enjoyable quick read though. I received my copy, started reading it, and didn't put it down until I was done. For a fun and light rom-com it was worth it.

Overall, I loved this book! And I want to think NetGalley and the publisher for allowing me an advanced copy in order to provide my honest review.

This book was ok although it seriously needed more editing, especially the ending. Both the gun scene and the two mothers scene was so far fetched and unnecessary. I liked the animal aspect, I think that was an added benefit.
