It played rather like a movie; I liked it, but I just about gave up in the middle. Glad I stuck with it, though, and I think I'll read the next installment when it comes out.

Un estratto che serve per rivelare la consapevolezza degli autori: pur non reinventando in maniera radicale il mito del vampiro (presentandolo -non per la prima volta- come un virus), sicuramente cercano di non incappare in quegli abusatissimi cliché di cui sono pieni sia film che libri horror, dando vita ad una storia piuttosto originale nel suo genere. Gli autori si distinguono anche nell'uso dei flashback, ben dosati: i capitoli restrospettivi non rompono la continuità della trama e non sono mai più lunghi di poche pagine.
La vicenda si apre proprio con questo espediente narrativo: Abraham (che qui ritroviamo bambino) ascolta sua nonna mentre gli racconta una leggenda facente parte del folcklore dell'Europa orientale e dell'Asia, ma che intreccerà la sua esistenza con quella di Setrakian.

Facciamo così conoscenza del Vampiro Ribelle, reincarnato nei corpo di Jusef Sardu, che ricomparirà non solo come "paziente zero" da cui inizierà il contagio su suolo americano, ma anche come "balena bianca", l'elemento che darà un senso alla vita di Abraham e lo consumerà al tempo stesso. Il flashback è ambientato nella seconda guerra mondiale e la famiglia Setrakian, ebrea, è stata deportata in un campo di concentramento polacco, sorte inizialmente evitata dal giovane, ma che di lì a poco sarà inevitabile; proprio nel campo di Treblinka (come vedremo in seguito) avviene il primo incontro tra lui e il Padrone.Dopo la digressione iniziale, ecco che la trama del romanzo comincia a delinearsi... un po' troppo lentamente. Dovremo aspettare un centinaio di pagine prima di entrare nella vicenda vera e propria, dovendo seguire un fin troppo dettagliato svolgimento delle indagini iniziali che, con la pretesa di rendere più credibile la vicenda, riescono invece a rallentarla facendo ricorso a termini tecnici e superflui; non dimentichiamo inoltre l'eccessivo spazio lasciato ad un eclissi, che qui passa dall'essere uno straordinario fenomeno naturale ad evento sovrannaturale portatore di oscuri presagi (difficile dimenticarlo, gli autori calcano pesantemente - e inutilmente- la mano per una ventina di pagine).
Da qui il ritmo comincia ad aumentare, la vicenda finalmente entra nel vivo

Un libro sia per gli amanti dell'horror che dei thriller; non potrai fare a meno di ingannare te stesso con la finta promessa "Ancora un capitolo, solo uno".
A decent book. I saw season 1 of the TV series before reading this. The two are quite similar and are complimentary to each other. They both frustrated me with the final confrontation. However I did enjoy the book overall. I listened to the audiobook read by Ron Perlman and he does a terrific job.
Guillermo Del Toro is a creative talent whose works burst with dark/gothic imagination. I am a huge fan. He is clearly known for the visual medium of film and the Strain displays his challenge of wrapping his imagery into words on a page. The end result is frankly a bit rough. It is valuable due to its mythology and vision rather than its writing craft. I felt that I had to push through some of the style choices and even character names which felt oddly contrived (Eph and Nora seemed to jut off the page as oddly unfitting). The opening sequence of a dark plane on a runway easily overwhelms any misgivings of the writing. Overall fun read and I look forward to the trilogy's final two additions.
An airplane makes a routine landing at JFK International Airport, but after touchdown the plan unexplainably goes black. The shades are all drawn, the lights are off and no one, passenger nor crew, can be contacted. Ephraim Goodweather from the CDC is called in and is shocked to find only four survivors. A deadly viral strain was unleashed on this plane that transformed the once human forms to parasitic entities that crave only two things: reproduction and blood. The Strain provides a unique spin on the overplayed Vampire genre by adding a biological yet horrific explanation to the phenomenon.

I liked it but the ending 1 bored me and 2 left me unwilling to finish the series.
достатньо було одної дуже зажерливої й не занадто завбачливої людини, щоб вампіри повилазили з темряви своїх схованок і влаштували локальний (а потім не) апокаліпсис. "штамм" – хроніка перших чотирьох діб цього щастя, упродовж яких людство все ще не здогадується, що його вкусило, і тільки невеличка команда відчайдушних борців із заразою (двоє з них працюють у санепіді, один – щуролов, а ще один просто давно знайомий із вампірами) намагається протистояти навалі, не вважаючи її плодом хворої уяви чи інтернет-фейком.
щоправда, ці вампіри теж якісь не дуже завбачливі: вони не просто п'ють людей, а й автоматично перетворюють їх, тому апокаліпсис настає зовсім швидко. упродовж тисяч років вампірам вдавалося ховатися й харчуватися, не привертаючи до себе особливої уваги (якщо не враховувати всяких бремів стокерів, яким усе одно ніхто не вірить), а тут – пандемія й тотальне ігнорування наслідків. ніхто їм не пояснив, бідолашним, що з такими темпами скоро нічого стане жерти. і тому, коли в тексті з'являються, це виглядає тільки логічно (і дуже, дуже круто).

вампіри – мисливці на вампірів
I like the fact that these are not your Twilight vampires, but that they have more in common with those shown in "Blade 2" and are scary enough. What I don't like about this book is that it reads like a movie script, especially in the beginning chapters. I could not help but think about how this would look on TV as a mini-series. Characters and situations are predictable and follow a movie formula.
