This was good, really good I have the sequel waiting at home for me and can't wait to start.
There are a lot of characters so it did take time for me get everyone straight. For whatever reason everytime Gus come around I was like "who the Hell is Gus" and had to sort of go back and get reaquainted with him. I appreciated that this was shorter then [b:The Passage|6690798|The Passage (The Passage #1)|Justin Cronin|http://photo.goodreads.com/books/1327874267s/6690798.jpg|2802546](what isn't? am I right?). It seemed like Hogan and Del Toro got everything right for me, the length, not too much gore, lots of eerie creepy suspense.
Quick Jessi Note:At one point there are Saint Bernards, I own a Saint Bernard(the cutest one ever) the moment it was said how sweet and loving they were I knew they were not long for this book. Which made me then concerned about my own escape plan if Vampire/Zombiepocalypse ever occurs. It is not a stress I need in my life right now but I will be working on it hopefully by the time I finish the second book I will have a revised escape plan that ensures the safety of my son and our gigantic dog

The writing is subpar, the characters are only passable, the dialogue is alternately flat and cliched - but the new take on vampires is enough to make for a fun read. Some of the early scenes with the initial spread of the virus are creepy, but nothing here was keeping me up at night. I do see how this book could easily make a show worth watching, so maybe I'll check that out.
As it turned out, this was a bad book to pick up during a pandemic. I got about halfway through and had to pause.
Ultimately, though, there isn’t really anything here that hasn’t already been covered in other virus/zombie/etc books and film, and I found it terribly clichéd. Wtf were you thinking Guillermo?!

After suffering through Twilight, I was so happy to read a new take on vampires that was actually good. Del Toro and Hogan weave a epic story of the vampire empidemic that is creepy and cool altogether. The characters are interesting and believable in an unbelievable setting. Now I'm chomping at the bit for the next book of the trilogy next year. Really good stuff here!
Wow, what a scary book this was! I'm normally not much of a horror / vampire fan (most of my recently abandoned books have something to do with vampires), but this book by the amazing director Guillermo Del Toro ("Pan's Labyrinth") and a co-author, really glued me to my seat. It was believable, graphic and down right frightening in places!
After a short flash back, it jumps to now, where a jumbo jet lands at Kennedy Airport and then abruptedly goes dead. No lights, no comm, nothing. Various agencies are called and and the strangeness only just begins.
After a few survivors are found and the rest of the bodies are moved to the morgue, well, you can guess what happens, as these aren't really dead, just vampires. There are scary stories of the survivors as they slowly turn into vampires and while the main protagonists try to find the leader. An old Jew, who escape Treblinka, is along to help out, as these medical people gradually become believers.
The authors do a good job of "explaining" the medical theory behind vampirism, and it gets pretty gruesome. I'm looking forward to the next two books in the trilogy, as it should be quite a ride as they try to clean up vampirism before it takes over the world.

David Lapham and Mike Huddleston's version of Guillermo Del Toro's wonderful horror novel is pretty damn good. It moves very fast, at times too fast, but captures a ton of what I loved about the novel. The main characters are fleshed out well and the evil is on full display. I wish they showed how gross the Strigoi actually are but its not bad. Overall, a very good read in an overpopulated genre.
I listened to this book on tape, and the narrator is Ron Perlman. I highly recommend this format! Also, it's a great story--very suspenseful. The only reason I am not giving it a "5" is because there are some rough spots: a few flat characters, some patches of poor storytelling, some places where it felt tedious and predictable. Overall, though, I really enjoyed it, and I've just started book 2, The Fall.
This is the most fun I’ve had reading a book this year.
