So this wasn't my favorite book, but it wasn't one I hate. I think my biggest problem was I recently finished a terrible vampire book and like after watching Jaws for the first time, I wasn't ready to go back in the water. I picked this because I wanted a scary book for Halloween and it was one I found on some of the horror book lists here on goodreads.

I found myself bored for quite a a lot of the book. It started off so slow to me and I had a hard time getting interested when it really started to pick up. Now there were a few times the story would pick up, but then it would fall off again. The best part about the book is it depicted the vampires as they should be. Not the popular whole whiney teen angst Vampire. There vampires would have torn them in half and used there bones for tooth picks. It was refreshing.

I have read it and I'm done. I don't think I will be reading the other two in the series.

Update:

I read this book in 2011 long before I knew this was going to be a television show. When the show started I was really curious to see how they were going to do the special effects. The trailer for it looked awesome so my wife and I decided we were going to watch this. I was hooked on the show right from the start.

The show was great, the book however was not my favorite. The idea is terrifying, a plan lands and everyone on it is dead. Later the bodies begin to get up and infect the rest of the city spreading quickly. When I read the book and reviewed it the first time I only gave it 2 stars. It was hard to keep my focus on the book and I was getting really bored. Since I love the show I decided to give this book one more try.

I liked it a little more but it was still really boring for about half of the book. The story seemed to drag on and on before anything really interesting happened. A lot of CDC talk and bodies in cold storage. The show doesn't have the luxury of a slow build. On a re-read I did enjoy this book a bit more this time around. Between the show and my re-read I am interested in finishing out the trilogy. I have already put myself on the waiting list for the audio book at the library.

The one thing I have to say about this book is that the Vampires are different with their straw like suckers that come from their throat, but they are ruthless. These vampires are exactly how they should be, they only have one thing on their mind and that is to feed and infect everyone. I am bumping my original rating from 2 stars to 3 out of 5 stars. Still not the best book I've read but I am going to see what book two brings. I know that in trilogies the first book is really just setting the stage. My hope is that the next book blows me away.

So, I read this because I'm watching the TV show and wanted to compare the two. There are definitely things in the TV show that I like better, and there were things in this story that I enjoyed being different from the TV show. Still, the show is following the book very closely and I'm glad I read it. I can't wait to see how they end this season of the show!

It was creepy (definitely not your Buffy type of vampires) and I thought it was refreshing that they were different. I'll probably give the next book a shot too!

Huge fan of Guillermo del Toro so really wanted to love this. Instead ended up just liking it. Not a bad book but ultimately way more conventional than I would have expected from him. True, it was co-written with Chuck Hogan but can't just put the blame on him. It's a very typical and by the number action/horror novel. Nothing wrong with that but thinking this could have been so much more.

2 1/2

A decently interesting and action-packed addition to the vampire mediaverse with some unique aspects like the viral component, but just too disjointed and redundant for long stretches. There's a lot of "okay we get it already" as the narrative often bounces between many people all with the same experience.

Some of the character development is also questionable -- protagonists going from stagnant for most of the book to sudden, mass changes accompanied by cringe dialogue. Generally just lazy writing that doesn't lead to any real sense of reward for reaching the climax and end of the novel -- won't be reading the rest of the trilogy.

creepy book.it was pretty amazing cant wait to read the next one!

Good twist on vampire theme. Not perfect. Graphic, and creepy. A good read, hard to put down. Will read others in series, but I already have a backlog of other titles awaiting my attention...

The first half of the book is really interesting, kind of a science fiction take on the vampire mythology, but then it shrinks into a dull, predictable action novel.
