Very nice modern interpretation of the classic Dracula. Plenty of subtle and less subtle references to the original. Nice that some of the mystic/magical elements were reduced, but could have done a better job at a more hard-science explanation (still kept non plausible mirrors and silver, for example).

As I took this book in my hands I just couldn't let it go!
I read in a day, went for the second part of the trilogy and trying to get a hold of the third and last part of this trilogy.
Vampires - but something completely new, not read before...can't wait to read the great finale"The night Eternal"...unfortunately I have no credit card, otherwise I would have bought it. I guess I'll have to be patient :)

pretty dude-heavy, and it can drag on a bit at times, but an interesting premise that makes for a really creepy tale. guillermo del toro strikes again!

Honestly, I picked this up mostly because I saw Del Toro on the cover and, not knowing he wrote, decided I needed it immediately. It's easy to say I was delighted, and this has easily became one of my fave books. The book has a weird take on vampires, and it has a lot more pseudo-science than I anticipated, but it WORKS. Especially considering it makes them all the more creepy.

DNF at 60%   ⭐ 1/2
This book is so stupid. I think it needed a whole lot more of Del Toro and a lot less of Chuck Hogan, but even then I'm not sure it would have saved it. I didn't care about any of the characters (and there were so so many), the 1st half was a slog of pointless dictionary entries that had nothing to do with the plot, and overall it's just bad.

Did you ever love a book but still think you could make it twenty times better with a little editing? 80% of this book felt like build up to me, but well written build up with a unique play on a vampire virus. Nothing sparkly or romantic here so far.
