A ton of clunky writing, characters who make constant stupid mistakes, characters who blunder into the story for a few pages only to be killed, an evil character called Eldritch (oh please, really?), the expected happeningjust as expected...
yet I STILL want to know what the hell happens next.
Damn, this story sucked me in as bad as that gruesome appendage that... shh.
I feel guilty for liking this messy book. The thing is this book is an homage to early horror films. It works on the nerves and the emotions in shameless concert. Cliches abound but there's also a wicked little story crawling free.
Above all, at the end, the mess works. I'm all in for the second part. What the hell, my brain needs a good horror vacation.
In fact, I've giving this messy fun four stars. Geesh, maybe I've been bitten — by silly, bloody fun!

I couldn't finish this book. Heck, I think I was only able to read 1/4 of it. I hadn't even gotten to the meat of the story yet, so I can't say whether or not the idea behind the book is good. The main problem I had with the book was the author's writing style. The description/imagery of the book was way overblown and dramatic. Even the the subject is no laughing matter, I couldn't help but laugh at the book just because of how ridiculous some of the writing was. In that regard at least, the book is like one of those cheap Sci-fi movies: so bad that it's funny.

Really enjoyed the story but I am not as in love with the writing style. Some of the writing is amazing but it seems to jump between "regular" and almost a young adult simpler text. It was also pretty drawn out considering the lack of deep character development (you really only know anything about Abraham and Eph) and the lack of setting detail.
Continuing with the next book though, overall rating
Good but not great

While I will admit this is not the book for everyone, I personally believe it is a wonderful new spin on the vampire genre. Instead of sparkling and looking pretty, the vampires of The Strain hark back to the days of Nosferatu and other devilish, bloodthirsty critters. It's action packed and character-driven, and it kept me on the edge of my seat the entire time. During a busy fall semester this book was there for me and when I got the chance, I devoured it. I loved the characters, loved the plot, and I can't wait for the next book!
