Well, it’s a hit! A young cat-eared girl arrives at the Countesses’ castle. She intends to kill her, but somehow that repulsion also draws her in. She is not the first to try to kill the Countess. Will she be the last? Playing on themes of classic gothic and fairytale texts, body horror, psychological horror, eroticism, and queerness, this little graphic novel is everything I wanted it to be. The art style is exquisite. The darkness of the castle, the flashes of red, the beautifully chosen views and angles to highlight the tension, eyelines, and the vastness of the castle vs the intimacy of this relationship, it’s really well done. Especially when there are no traditional panels - it all flows together superbly. No spoilers, but the part when the primary colour goes from black to white is just *chefs kiss*. It only loses a star because while I don’t think this is a book you need to FULLY *get*, I do think the vagueness and unanswered questions would have made it 5 stars, with just a tiny tiny tiny bit more context. But then again… isn’t that part of the fun?
The artwork was beautiful, but the story was lacking. It's very Gothic, but I still would have liked the story to be more fleshed out.
“Who are you?” asked the girl.
“Who are you?” asked the cat.
This captivating graphic novel is beautifully drawn and incredibly creepy. A great follow up to Into the Woods, Carroll does not disappoint with this gruesome, magical story.
