Addie makes a deal with the darkness to escape the confines of life as a woman in 18th century rural France. If you love art history, fantasy, and romance this book will expertly tie in your favorite things. The story of artistic lives cut short across three-hundred years. This is my first Schwab novel and I look forward to reading their other books!

This story riffs on the devil at the crossroads myth. I thought this take was very unique and made the ending of the story suprising and (though sad) satisfying. I cried at the end but walked away at peace with the stories arc and aching for the Addie and Henry’s tragic endings.

Addie LaRue, I remember you.

Loved this read from the beginning and was not sure how it could possibly end up until the last page!  Addie has lived 300 years, but is forgotten by all… until Henry.  This is a story of love, life, and living. Absolutely beautiful.

It is really good.
I started sobbing when Henry was about to die, and I think it is not because I love the character but more because of the feelings he has when the time arrives and how V. E. Schwab describes and analyze them.
For more than half of the book I was thinking of not ending it, although it's beautifully described and written I didn't felt in the right mood to read such a sad story of some who wants to live and feels so alone. I continue and I liked the relationship Addie and Henry had, although I thought Luc and Addie had a more interesting chemistry.
I understand and get why people simp for Luc more than Henry, while Henry and Addie's love seem more of some who had found a wreck and want to take advantage of it and not a real love that would have emerge in a normal circumstance. However, I also don't see that Luc loves her, he is obsess with her and they fit together as they are the only constants in each other lives, so at the end is similar to Henry's love.
I liked the end, although I cried like a baby (but that is on me because I cry for everything), but I don't get why people is excited that she ended with Luc. You may not like Henry, but it's obvious that Addie doesn't want to leave with Luc (I mean the new deal says it all), and still people route for them.

This book is exactly what I wanted it to be. I love books that linger in my mind after I finish reading it, and that are moderate to far on the devastation scale. I felt warmth, I felt affection, I felt frustration, and I definitely cried. I liked the main characters, they were also annoying and unlikable to me at some points. The side characters are fantastic. I am a little iffy on how I feel about the ending of the book, but by no means should that deter you from reading it. I did buy this book. My metric for buying is if I think I'll read it again, and this one made the cut.
