An epic and intricately woven tale! The delicate balance of alternating perspectives
through time and generations
made this so special.

Very dark at times, but a worthwhile journey,
its tragic cycle ending with hope, love, and healing for these incredible heroes

The Spear Cuts Through Water is one of those books that changes you. When you finish the book, and set it down, it demands silence, the story hanging over you.

I wish I could say something more interesting than this: it's beautiful. It's a rich tapestry of each life and their connections to each other and the world, weaving together each moment into something at once eternal and fleeting. It's melodic and intimate, utterly profound, transformative. And best of all, it's queer.

I won't forget this book anytime soon. Thank you, Simon, for writing it.

I am at a loss of words to describe this book. I haven't read a book this good since...I don't even know.
I feel something moved inside me.

I will absolutely check out the author's other book(s)

It was a very unique Story which was written in a gripping way by the author. I really liked his way of story telling. His characters had depth and even though the story was mystical and fantastical they all had relatable aspects to their personality and motivs.
The only thing that put me off a little was the level of violence, torture and their graphic description, but that I think is more something that is not personally for me and not the fault of the book.

This was such a good book.
It's a classic hero's journey type of story and it's being told in such a different way that it surprised me. The POV switches really keep you focused on the story and actually thinking about it at the beginning in a way that's kind of impossible to describe.
I loved the prose and the almost lyrical way this story is told as if reciting it from memory out loud like a folk tale.
I also loved the main characters. I was rooting for them from the very beginning, especially Keema who always seemed to be the butt of the joke and got shit on for his missing arm. He deserved nice things. And June was just trying to make up for his past, for following the orders he was given without thinking about them. I have to admire his determination throughout the novel.
I will say that it took me a while to get used to the POV switching and I think that hindered my ability to grasp the world building and the story set up a bit, especially since I was listening to it rather than reading it physically. I knew that it was going to be a challenge in this format going into the book, so I just want to make sure others are aware of that as well.
On the surface, this is a hero's journey with a love story, but if you dig deeper this novel is about rising up against tyrannical government and healing what has been broken. It is beautifully written, even with the slightly confusing POV switches, and I would definitely recommend it to anyone who reads fantasy books.

“This is a love story to its blade-dented bone.”

I don’t know what to say, sometimes words aren’t enough to describe something and how it made you feel and I’m at a loss for words. This is a unique experience, I don’t think I’ve actually read a book like this one. The narration is like nothing else, you’re basically being told a story in a story (I’m not sure if this makes sense but whatever it is what it is). Every part of this story is weaved so intricately together that it’s hard to describe it without spoiling it (although tw for cannibalism 🤩), just know that it will knock you off your feet. I was really confused at first but the vibes of this novel are immaculate so I didn’t care.

“And of all things that lie between these heavens this one has seen and understood, it has been witness to and has told the tales of crimes of far greater magnitude than that of a boy who decided to live for himself.”

The writing style is mind blowing, I’ve actually cried multiple times because it was too beautiful… (embarrassing for me) The characters were brought to life almost tenderly, although traumatized and in the midst of a war Keema and Jun were perfect. But so were every single character, yes even the ones that weren’t there long enough to have a name.

This is a story about guilt, belonging, identity and legacy. But I think that intimacy was also a pretty big part of it. Anyway, I just finished it and I feel as if in a fog but I loved every second of it.
