“This is a love story to its blade-dented bone.”

If this book is what 5/5 is for me then I may need to reevaluate every other rating I’ve given. While it took me several months to get back and finish this book, I can’t even remember why I paused reading in the first place. The Spear Cuts Through Water is such a vivid and lush story. We follow Jun and Keema along in this tragically violent, beautiful, mysterious, and magical world. But it’s also a moving picture of repressed desire, queerness, and disability. Truly, truly gorgeous. That ending had silent tears running down my cheeks. I think Jimenez may have written what will one day be known as a fantasy classic.

Note: This is likely a difficult read if you are inexperienced with a second person narrative or frequent narrative switching. The audiobook is GREAT and I highly recommend it.  But I think having an ebook or physical copy to follow along with is a good idea.

I do not know if I can put into words how beautiful and lovely this story is. I adore the dual timelines and the way they weave together near the end. It is simultaneously about how life goes on even after we're gone and we're specks in the great tapestry of life AND about how one person (or two) can make a grand difference in the world.

I read this and then immediately started the audio book. I felt completely immersed in this story. I enjoyed the constant back and forth between 3 perspectives. I also found it interesting that as much violence as there was, I could find empathy with the worst of the abusers. It was also a unique experience for every single character, background included, to have a voice.

Frankly, it earns the hype. Using different fonts for each voice gave this book a Greek chorus feeling with new insights as opposed to repetition. That concept humanizes the one-off killed soldiers and characters treated as cannon fodder in so many other media. "Humanizes"? Too blasé of a word; the man you killed had hopes and dreams outside of being a soldier, too (as immortalized in Tim O'Brien's "The Man I Killed" from The Things They Carried). Successfully got over my bias against epic fantasy, and oh my poor sweet boy the defect tortoise, you deserved the world.

This is by far the most unique and weird fantasy book I’ve ever read, and I’ll struggle to explain my feelings about it. This book was almost like poetry in novel form - not in the structure - but in the content and artistry of the writing. It flips from 1st to 2nd to 3rd person POV even within the same paragraph, and for this reason it took me a week to get through the first 50-100 pages, and during that time I thought about DNF-ing it every day. It does settle in 3rd person for the majority of the book, with stretches of 2nd person and scattered sentences of 1st. I found the 2nd person sections very boring.

The story itself had a mythical quality to it. The magic in the book didn’t have much rules or explanation which is not my favorite style of fantasy. I couldn’t really predict what was going to happen next at any point.

My favorite part of the book was actually the romance, but if you’re reading this just for the romance - don’t. It plays a very minor role, yet for me it’s one of the most beautiful and compelling romances I’ve read.

I wouldn’t recommend this to many people because I can’t say I enjoyed the experience a lot, but for some I would highly recommend it. If you like books that are creative, poetic, lyrical, mythical, brutal, and break the mold of a fantasy book, you should read this. If you like magical realism with an undercurrent of romance, you should read this. However, if you like rules in your fantasy and don’t appreciate things like POV-switching for the sake of poetry and story-telling, this isn’t for you.
