I'm honestly not exaggerating when I say this is my favourite book not just this year, but for quite a few years. If you know Okinawa, it might have slightly more impact - I remember driving down from Nago to Naha, and we were literally driving along a US army base perimeter for nearly an hour, just to give an idea of its size - , but its real power is in its excruciating personal honesty about her relationship with her parents, and most importantly her mother.

I added this to my TBR more than a year ago upon seeing it as one of the must read memoirs of 2021 but I cant recall what article. So when I chanced upon the sole copy I bought it early this year but got the ~mood~ to read it recently.

I like reading memoirs and this was no different. It’s telling her story  — but also her mom’s, and also her dad’s, and also their relationship to one another — plus the details of Okinawa. It’s a bit loaded altogether, all those details packed for under 300 pages may be the reason why it’s three stars. I enjoyed reading it still.

It’s interesting to know more and deeper about Okinawa. And although I am not a “half” in ethnicity, I feel like as an Asian, bits of her confusion growing will make her relatable. What I like about this memoir is the slow reconciliation of parents-child / mother-child (not that i like it slow) but how the storytelling lead to such. I think this is a beautiful memoir.

I love how this book intertwined the author’s family story with the history of Okinawa. This was such a beautifully written memoir about identity and the audiobook was fabulous.
