While technically a memoir, Brina's story also contains a good mother-daughter story about what it means to cross generations, cultures, and historical events to meet someone at their core (and to truly understand them).

I thought this was a beautiful take on a memoir, mixing the author's personal experiences, with her moms, and with a general view of the experiences of Okinawans. I learned a ton from this book and found the prose so engaging.
