Fast paced and imaginative

A fun and interesting story. Harley is a good character and I enjoyed her getting to know her new friends and colleagues. Clearly aimed at YA and written with that group in mind it is still an enjoyable read.

Magical

It is a beautiful story from beginning to end. It makes all the emotions twitch at some point and time in the story. I’m hooked.

I just need to get Harry Potter out of my head! It is obvious the author might have struggled to figure out how to start this series and decided to pull from a best seller. There were striking similarities which made me sad because the concept is actually decent.
If you can get over the Harry Potter similarities the you have to love on from the characters as well. They are decent. Not great but not bad either somewhere in the middle. I can not connect with the main character Harley for some strange reason, I don’t know if it’s her demeanor or her outlook on things but they don’t twist my heart as some characters in books usually do. There is also a lack of drama even though very dramatic things are taking place. The main love romance, Wade, seems to be a little dry and not too intriguing as well which can be disappointing. I want to root for the romance not wish she looked else where which, is what I found myself doing the entire book. Hopefully in the next one there will be more drama! Bring on the heart throb!
That being said, really decent story line, I’m
Interested in reading on only because this could turn into something good, not because it is in this book.

Wow Wow Wow......

Now i had tried this Author hot bloods series the first book and really wasn't for me..... So i put this author aside a few years back... however this book fit a challenge i was participating in so thought i would give it a go....

Its not your typical YA the heroine is Mature (for the most part) brilliantly written and doesn't fall in love at the first set of Green eyes.

Its like Ghostbusters and Harry potter had a lovechild.....

Harley Smith is an orphaned empath (and some) working for a casino to find people trying to cheat. After a good payout nights work she stumbles across a monster and the handsome Wade who seems to have certain capabilities similar to her own.....

After that a whole world open up and Harley is thrown headfirst into its underbelly.

I can see certain aspects where the Author has been influenced from other stories but she has combined it with her own unique imagination making it a world i devoured in a day... on to book 2

The first chapter wasn't bad but after that shit went cringe fast. I wouldn't compare this to Harry Potter at all when it is blantantly screaming, flailing, and tripping over Twilight.

I liked it. Guilty as charged.
It feels good to just read for pure enjoyment. Its was easy, exciting, and fun.

I read a lot of hype about this book, so thought I would give it a try, but stopped halfway through because I was tired of the weak writing and offended by some of the things that both author and characters take for granted is normal. Regarding the former: the writing is cliched and unsophisticated. Some examples: at one point, the narrator proclaims to herself that she will just observe and "soak everything up like the red-headed sponge that I am." Being red-headed is completely irrelevant in that context. Just empty words. Lots of that throughout. In another place, she uses the phrase "going forward," which is always empty. There is no other way to go, unless there is time travel, which there is not in this book (or at least there is no indication that it exists in the first half of the novel). She just meant "in future," and whenever you're talking about events that are yet to come you are necessarily talking about the future, and the phrase doesn't have to be said. Regarding the latter: in Harley's first encounter with the coven, they restrain her physically (using magic) so that they can forcibly draw blood which she has not only not given them permission to do, but which she has, in fact, explicitly denied them permission to do. Everyone, including Harley, is fine with that after, but I was not. Might as well be rape. Not interested in the rest of this book or others in the series.

Loved it! Absolutely loved it. It's like Harry Potter meets Charmed meets Supernatural. Funny, adventurous, mystery... Harley is very relatable. I love her sass and snarky comments. Highly recommend. Can't wait to read book 2 in the series!
