Read the whole book but don’t really feel compelled to read any more of the series.
I actually listened to this book on Audible. So maybe its because I wasn't actually reading it or maybe the narrator just wasn't doing it for me but I had i hard time getting into this. I feel like I called all the "Surprise" and the ones to come.
I had high-ish hopes for this. I was hoping for a quick, but good YA read. The way it started out gave me hope, but as it continued I got more and more bored. The writing seems lazy. The main character is meh and the ~mysterious bad boy~ is annoying. I made it to chapter 7, a whole whopping 17%, before I gave in and DNF’d
Picked up this book because it was free through Kindle Unlimited and promised to be "the next Harry Potter." The writing was all over the place, the characters flat, and the romantic love triangle thing going on was just uncomfortable. I was able to finish the book and it's not the worst thing that I've read this year.
I finished it but really wish I'd just walked away. Awful writing, probably the worst dialog I've ever read. Just Mary Sue cliche after cliche.
Easily one of the top 5 worst books I've read. And I read so many terrible books.

I seem to be the opposite of most readers here. I had trouble at the beginning of the book and got more involved at the end! It took me a while to connect with Harley and the other characters. I also didn’t like the very beginning where almost everything was a phrase put into quotation marks—but that ended quickly. I definitely got vibes from other things I’ve read before—but that’s the point of literature, right? We read stories, learn from them, and interpret them in our own ways. I’ll be giving the second one a shot!
.. I loved the characters in this book! Each character has a lovely defined voice so there’s no having to try and work out who’s speaking or doing anything. The flow of this book was just lovely. I was enchanted by Harley from the get-go. This is definitely a good read
I really wanted to love this book but I’ve ended up feeling duped by some pretty persistent Facebook marketing that convinced me to purchase it. It’s a 5 stars for the marketing but a seriously disappointed reader here.
Pacing was awful and it felt like a first draft that hasn’t been worked at all. When I check the authors page and see just how prolific and fast her turn out of books is it makes more sense. There definitely could be a book worth reading here if only quality over quantity was the goal.
And all the way through the Harry Potter plot points and characters are so thinly disguised it was irritating. It put me right at the brainstorming desk with the author over and over again. I could actually hear her saying “ooo if hogwarts/ Malfoy/diagon alley/ Voldemort, (insert any Harry Potter element) wasn’t the same what could it be? And that’s the problem, this story was never developed enough to move far enough away from this to take on its own flesh blood and soul.
Really disappointing and almost became a discarded unfinished book. I struggled to get to the end. So sad I won’t be reading any more as I would love to find a book that was all this one promised to be.

Audio book review.
I am surprised at just how much I enjoyed myself in this story. The world building is so good! The idea that an entire magical dimension can run on the power generated by monsters. And not just any monsters, creatures created from the expulsion of magic when someone goes supernova with their powers. Ooh, makes for good reading. And a king monster to rule them all, a big baddie that secretly likes our main character. (PLEASE tell me Ketsy gets out eventually!) I love the magic system, the characters so far, the school/law enforcement dynamic.
One thing I did NOT like was the constant forcing of the main character to comply. They stalk her then forcibly take her blood to test and refuse to let her leave. If she does leave, she is threatened with shunning by all society and basically told her life will never be the same. My inner independent woman was all hackles up at that, and I can totally feel Harley's frustration. I like that she's a bit older, not of high school age. I also like that this genre floats on the higher end of Young Adult, closer to New Adult with its style of writing and character development. Maybe I'm just glad it avoids the cliches that seem to make Young Adult these days so insufferable? Would definitely recommend!
