Didn't like the main character, and I would be stuck with him for the whole book. Also was in the process of choosing my book for my A-level French course and picked 'A bag of marbles' over this one.
Je n'aime pas le personnage principal et j'irais avec lui pour le roman complet. En plus, j'ai été choisir le livre pour mon examen français (je suis anglaise) et j'ai choisi « Un Sac de Billes » plutôt que ce roman.

This book, more specifically the main character and the secondary characters made me pissed off!
The topics discussed are some of the most emotionally triggering -Torture of animals, beating women, beating others, violence, death of a parent, and more- all of these were discussed but what made them more severe is the writing.
The writing itself, is brilliant, a masterpiece even. I rarely feel like the author can say what he has with Just the words they are needed to. he gives simple information as they are, nothing more nothing less.
Back to the main topic, the topics were discussed matter-of-factly, there was no dressing it to make it look less bad, it was in a bland emotionless way, which is the main point in writing this book.
The main character is very simple, his emotions are detached from the sentences. we are seeing his life as it is. no feelings involved, literally!
The second part IS The moment. when we are about to finish the first part, the author drops the bomb. AKA the point of no return, it was an absolute delight! it was a perfect play, He made us curious and intrigued to see where all of this is going. hen made his move.
so, The way the words and sentences are written as matter-of-fact info aligns so well with the story. The detachment, the unpassionate life, the have no opinion, no personality just highlits it all.
and emphasize how in the end he didn't know just how much good he had it until he lost it all!
I was skeptical about this book, but it proved me wrong!
