The story begins when Leon's mother is pregnant with his brother, Jake. The baby comes home and after a while things aren't what they seem. Leon's mother is unable to cope with the breakdown of her relationship to Jake's father. Jake is left to care for his baby brother.
This is a heartbreaking story of what happens to the boys who are then taken away from their mother by social services when she has a mental breakdown.
Leon is mixed race, but his brother Jake is white. What follows is the most sad recollection of events as Leon begins to cope with the massive changes in his life. He is a loving, resilient boy. It's hard to explain much more of the story without giving it away.
This book is a classic and I've no doubt will be appearing on secondary school reading lists before long.
I have not read such an emotional and powerful book for some time and was sobbing to myself several evenings reading this book. I'll definitely be looking for other books by Waal in the future.

It was surprisingly enjoyable although I usually steer clear of books that threaten to be a sob story. I like that it was read by an older adult, as it is aimed at an adult audience.
I don't want to say much about the plot points, but you can go into it ... rather unafraid. It hits hard, but it's unlikely to wreck you or totally ruin your winter vibes. I don't know if it's historically accurate, but the vibes seemed kind of right.
Inspiring characters is the strongest attribute here. At least I was rooting for them.

"Mijn naam is Leon". Zo stelt de acht jaar oude Leon zichzelf voor wanneer hij zijn pasgeboren broertje Jake voor het eerst ontmoet in het ziekenhuis. Hun moeder Carol slaat het tafereeltje eventjes gade, krijgt zin in een sigaret, ziet in Leon de perfecte babysit en verlaat de kamer.
De openingsscène van Mijn Naam is Leon van Kit de Waal illustreert meteen mooi de verhoudingen tussen de hoofdpersonages. Carol is geen geboren moederkloek. Ze heeft een labiele persoonlijkheid en worstelt met verslaving. Leon is dus van kleins af aan gewend om voor zichzelf (en voor haar) te zorgen. Wanneer Jake erbij komt, is het dan ook Leon die een groot deel van de verantwoordelijkheid op zich neemt. Hij doet enorm zijn best, maar zonder geld of een helpende hand van Carol, moet hij vroeg of laat de hulp van een andere volwassene inroepen. Die trekt aan de alarmbel, waarop Jake en Leon in een pleeggezin terecht komen.
Hoewel dit de broertjes de kans biedt om op te groeien in een stabielere omgeving, heeft Leon het moeilijk met de nieuwe situatie. 31. A book about a family ✨ This book was beautiful and heartbreaking and lovely all at once. Written in the perspective of Leon, a child, it maintained this wonderful childlike innocence throughout. It could have tied up a few loose ends a little better, but overall a really nice read.
This slow-paced novel was moving and emotional, giving me the chills as I saw the world through the young protagonist's eyes. It was difficult not to feel angry for this boy's predicament, though in the world of foster care (regardless of the country or decade), his story was not nearly as dark as it could have been. There was hope in this story, that I do hope was born out of the author's own experiences working with the foster care system, that some children do, in fact, get the support and love they need and deserve. I recommend this novel for a tender read, a bit of a cry, and a delightful rendering of a young character trying to learn about his place in the world.
I read this for our book group in November, otherwise this might have passed me by. That would have been a shame as this is a brilliant book! Written from the perspective of Leon who is nine and in foster care it is poignant, uplifting, sad and and sometimes very funny. The book also gives a real sense of time and place set in Brixton, London in the early 1980s at the time of the riots and the marriage of Charles and Diana.
I read it really quickly which always a good sign. Great characters and relationships, fab plot and real emotion and atmosphere. What more could you want from a novel? It is a must read.
