simple language, complex story.

Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher who gave me an ARC of this outstanding debut novel.

Wow, what can I say? I absolutely adored this book, and am so pleased to have been given the opportunity to read it! It is by turns funny, moving and devastatingly sad, but is ultimately a heartwarming read that stands out from the pack. Filled with memorable characters, this book had a huge emotional impact on me and is one that will stay with me for a long time to come.

A very easy 5 stars. My full review will be available on my blog (calturnerreviews.blogspot.co.uk) closer to publication date.

This was a cute and moving story about a mixed race kid growing up in foster care in the 70s. A good addition to the GCSE spec.

Heartbreaking novel about a young boy called Leon, his beloved little brother Jake and his unwell mother.
We watch life through Leon's eyes, at the adults with the pretend faces and pretend emotions, who tell him one thing but mean another, we feel the anger and upset when the adults let him down and are witness when Leon takes revenge by stealing from the adults' handbags.

If there was ever a book to make you want to adopt or foster a child in need, it's this.

I found this book really dragged on and it was hard to read for any length of time. It had a sweet if anticlimactic ending. Nothing special, but could’ve been really interesting.
