Earth Spells Are Easy by Rene George is the first book in the Grimoires of a Middle-Aged Witch. This is a paranormal, fantasy romance and is a fun and fast read. A little quirky and humorous.
Iris is in her forties and has just gotten divorced. She is trying to juggle work, a teenage son, and life in general, all while trying to get over her ex. At this point, she is just going through the motions but that is all about to change. She goes to an estate auction and bits on a box of old books which just happens to contain a Grimoire. Things are starting to get weird. Her garden gnome named Linda has come to life and won’t stop talking, and Linda is trying to train her. There is a cat hanging around that is a bit chonky and has secrets of his own. Oh, and she is being set up on a date with a good-looking professor of the occult who tells her she is a witch. Iris really thinks she is going crazy. She is starting to learn that the spells are easy, but they exact a toll and if she wants to survive, she needs to figure this out, and quick!
This is a great palate cleanser book filled with snarky humor, a kooky gnome, and Bob, Iris’ familiar. The pace is fast-moving and the magic system is interesting. Cozy and entertaining.
The plot is intriguing and the characters are all lovable. This is a great start to the series and I can’t wait to continue. Iris is a believable character that is relatable and her son is great too. Oh, and a touch of romance as well, what’s not to like!?

Earth Spells Are Easy is an adorable tale of change and magic. Forty something and newly divorced, Iris is about to come into her powers as a new earth witch. She is aided in her transition by a cranky garden gnome, an adorable cat and a hunky druid. This story had me at turns laughing out loud and empathizing with life throwing changes in rapid succession. I can’t wait for the next installment.

A quick-paced 2.5 star read. I thought there was a lot more telling than showing, but the plot was fun and it was just what I needed after a long 1000+ page book.

Easy, enjoyable read. Cast of characters is pretty homogeneous tho (everyone is pale, pretty, blond or red-headed, and fit). All of the characters pretty much sound the same.
