“Imagine the power grid as a human circulatory system. Electricity is distributed, like blood being carried around the body…”

Panic, disorder, chaos. A perfectly orchestrated attack on modern civilization. The widespread collapse of electrical grids is spreading across Europe, and then the United States. The consequences are devastating.

When Piero Manzano becomes a suspect in the greatest power disaster in history, either he must find the true perpetrators or spend his life being hunted.

With the international flair of Dan Brown’s Robert Langdon series, Blackout will take you on the breathless journey of one man who must stop a terrible force.

A pretty good thriller, a bit draggy in the middle. (Maybe being translated contributed to that.)

My Food for Thought book club is discussing this. We read books about climate, the environment, and food. The author seems to have done his research on electrical grids etc. In the Afterward, the author says, "If Blackout, on top of a few thrilling hours, should also have imparted a bit of knowledge or even give you some small cause to stop and think, that would make me especially happy." It definitely made me think - it made me think about keeping cash on hand and laying in some supplies in case of disaster! Wide-scale loss of electrical power feels all too plausible.

I especially enjoyed that this thriller is not set in the U.S. (the U.S. President barely makes an appearance!) and that romance is not a prime focus.

Great premise. quite exciting and thrilling... but I gave this three stars because the characters were all way too shallow, and all very pessimistic in nature.

Written by an Austrian author and a bestseller in Europe, this thriller describes a devastating electrical blackout across Europe that goes on for a couple of weeks. It's winter and suddenly the lights go out in country after country. The book is written from multiple points of view following different people in different areas. The primary characters are an Italian who is a former hacker, a CNN reporter, and various officials working to restore the grids and maintain order and security. As the blackout drags on food becomes scarce, hospitals are unable to help patients, gas for vehicles is in short supply, and people become desperate. When it is discovered that the grid failure is the work of hackers, the search for the culprits intensifies. I could easily imagine the book being made into a movie. It's a good thriller, and a cautionary tale showing how vulnerable we might be with our dependence on technology.
