Easily would have been 5 stars with some editing and better pacing. But overall a great extension of the darker shades of magic series

I love how this book introduces new characters while also still expanding on the established characters from a darker shade of magic. However, I felt like I was a little bored during the white London story line (maybe I’m not the biggest fan of it bc I never liked the twins/Holland’s story in the original series) I am excited to see how the new queen gets involved with the crew from red London in future books.

Not much of a fantasy reader but this book has surely convinced that a need to become one as this was quite the joyride that I didn't want to end. While it took me a while to get used to the amount of characters that were being introduced, once I got my footing is was really interesting to see how their stories ended up coming together. I fell in love with so many of the characters and I can't wait to get to know them further in future books. Before reading, I didn't know this was a spinoff or sorts with previous books following several characters from this one but there were alot of standalone elements that made me feel like I was reading something completely new as well. Overall, this was well written, the magic system was dumbed down enough for me to understand and with the book being well over 600 pages I felt like I flew through it as the excitement continued to build page after page.

solid 3.5 but the last like 10 pages really made me excited for the next in the series! i loved coming back to kell, lila and rhy as darker shades is one of my all time favorite series but it felt slightly bittersweet as i wasn’t as invested in the story. i think there’s potential but i was 400 pages in at some point and felt like nothing had happened and i hadn’t made a dent. i hope the second book brings more of that classic VE Schwab to it

i will still die for lila and kell and their happiness
*dont fuck with them VE i’m warning you
