Band 7 halt.

Meg Koranda arrives in the small town of Wynette, Texas, just in time to fulfill her role as Maid of Honor in her best friend's wedding. Lucy is marrying Ted Beaudine, the town darling and the Most Perfect Man on Earth. Everyone loves him. Everyone. Even sunbeams seem to follow him around! Meg is the only person who finds him irritating, and who likewise irritates him. What Meg quickly realizes is that the match isn't as ideal as it should be, and Lucy is intimidated by her fiance's perfection. When she voices her reservations, she starts a chain of events no one sees coming, and suddenly she finds herself the most hated person in town. Unfortunately for Meg, she lacks the money to leave, so for once in her unfocused life she is forced to find reserves of resourcefulness and determination she didn't know she had in order to survive and overcome the obstacles and complications now blocking her path.

I put this book on hold based on an interesting blurb I found on a list of this year's Top 10 Romance Novels. (Put out by the publisher? I don't remember which list it was.) I was expecting it to be a good story, based on its presence on that list, but I was not prepared to be so drawn in by the story and the complexity of the character development. Then I discovered it was book #6 in a series with at least 7 volumes so far--happy day! I've gone on to read #7 (even better than #6!), and I plan to go back and read the earlier novels as well. What a delight to find a new-to-me author who writes with such depth, humor, and compassion for the follies and foibles of her characters.

For readers' advisors: character and story doorways. Some sex scenes and swearing.

3.75-4 small town stars

SEP at it again. This is my third SEP book, and while I loved the other two more ([b:Kiss an Angel|73086|Kiss an Angel|Susan Elizabeth Phillips|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1309115033l/73086._SY75_.jpg|1040905] and [b:It Had to Be You|73070|It Had to Be You (Chicago Stars, #1)|Susan Elizabeth Phillips|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1297088239l/73070._SY75_.jpg|2268839] are 5-star favorites), this one did not disappoint. It's SEP's writing that makes it interesting. Although, I did want a bit more from Ted's POV, because this man can definitely keep things close to the chest.

I enjoyed Meg a lot. She's a great heroine with a cool journey of self discovery. The town people were a bit weird and definitely too worshipping of Ted, but overall fun.

I have not read the previous books in the series and this book can be read as a standalone.

This is not my fave SEP - I wanted Ted to grovel way more (although I loved how long he had to wait). But Meg???? One of SEPs best heroines imo. And the town?? Loved.

This book also has so many problematic references for it being written in 2010. And yet no one writes conflict like SEP.

I loved this book.

I squealed, laughed, raged, and cried. All in the same chapter...

Meg Koranda is a bridesmaid in her bestfriend Lucy's wedding. She should be happy her bestfriend has finally found someone who she wants to spend the rest of her life with. But something isn't right with Lucy and when Meg meets Ted Beaudine she understand why. He's perfect. I mean birds singing, light halos and otherworldly beauty perfect. And that's exactly the problem, he's too perfect. Meg is positive that Lucy would be miserable if she married Ted and in typical Meg Koranda fashion she tells her exactly that.

What Meg didn't expect was that it take Lucy until she was standing on the entrance of the church in full bride regalia to realize Meg was right, or that she'd be blamed for the whole fiasco. After jilting Ted at the altar and practically disappearing from the face of the planet, Lucy leaves Meg to clean up the mess. But Meg can't even clean up her life, which has been circling the gutter for sometime now. Standing in front of Lucy and Ted's parents she's faced with all her insecurities and breaks down. Feeling pretty small she gets suckered into spending a couple extra days in Wynette even though she wants to do nothing more than escape this town, where Ted is venerated as if he were a God and everyone pretty much thinks she's the Devil. Everyone is hoping Lucy will change her mind, realize the error of her ways and come back, and even though Meg knows better she agrees to wait it out.

Except she didn't count of one thing. Her finances have dwindled to zero, and she had thought that Lucy's parents were going to foot the bill for her small extended stay, as stupid as that sounds. She is forced to make a quick getaway, leaving behind her suitcase and her pride, as she runs out on the bill. She didn't count on Ted Beaudine though, the man seems to be everywhere and it seems he's gunning for her. She is forced to return and find an alternative to her predicament. She is forced to pay off her debt by working as an underpaid maid to the sour owner of the country club, her, Meg Koranda, the daughter of the Glitter Baby and Hollywood's golden it man Jake Koranda.

But Meg refuses to be let the town of Wynette tear her down. She's going to show everyone, including her parents, that she can survive on her own, with no money, no friends and no place to stay...even if it kills her.

Let me begin by saying that I hated Ted at the beginning...

Every time he was caught by a shaft of light or birds started singing I wanted to pull a Rapunzel and take care of his smolder.
Ted meet frying pan.

Yeah, I get it he was jilted... he was pissed... but damn what he did to Meg was just plain mean.

Maybe I'm being biased, because I truly loved Meg Koranda. That girl had moxie. For all she was a screw up she had tenacity. She didn't take shit, and gave as good as she got, and she got a lot. I hated how the town of Wynette, and I mean all of them, basically pimped her out so they could get what they wanted, and despite the way they treated her she went along with it. All of it.

Speaking of Wynette. What the heck kind of town is this? It was like high school! They ganged up on the new girl and bullied the heck out of her! Grown women acting like a group of mean girls.

When they cornered her in a bathroom and gave her money to leave the town, I was so glad Meg didn't play along with their little game. I know they were desperate, but desperation shouldn't make you act like a... jerk... for lack of a stronger word.

And another thing the way those people worship Ted like he was Jesus reincarnate, come on! So much that a perfectly normal teen girl turned into a psycho because of him. That is unhealthy.

This was my first book by Susan Elizabeth Phillips, but I loved her writing style. Her story telling was superb, and I didn't lose interest once. I got to admit, I'm a lot like Meg. I don't have my stuff together, and to see someone so real was refreshing. So many books now a days are filled with characters that are so unbelievable they become insufferable. They're too kind, too sweet, too beautiful. Meg was none of those things. She was very selfish at times, she had a temper and was flawed to death. At thirty she didn't have life figured out, and she was still trying to find her passion. Makes some of us that are on the cusp of thirty...me (coughs)...realize there is still time for us.

I like books that follow a curve. They're not predictable per say, but that you somewhat know where it's headed. It makes it that much sweeter when you're gunning for something and it happens and you feel vindicated. I think those are the signs of a good plot. Susan Elizabeth is a good plotter (is that even a word?)

This was the 6th book in the Wynette series and even though I hadn't read the other before and wasn't familiar with any of the characters, I didn't feel lost. I didn't feel the need to find out who this or that person was because it was explained really well.

I'm definitely picking up another one of Susan Elizabeth Phillips books. This was totally satisfying.

Also, any book that has a Harry Potter reference is okay in my eyes.
