This book was... weird. I originally read it for school, as part of a dystopian book assignment, but I actually enjoyed it. The whole story's told from a bee's perspective, but it's actually interesting to read from that POV. Props to Laline Paul!

This book was both weird and relaxing. Weird in that this is a book about a hive of bees. That's it. Humans appear in the prologue, epilogue, and once in the story, but other than that it's bees and the world they see.

Of course, this story and its conflicts can be applied to humans, but for me reading about a society of insects was a nice break from reading about current events.

There will be a better review after some sleep. :)

Not the sort of book I would usually pick up but I enjoyed. I found the concept of a bee telling the story quite unusual and enjoyed the perspective on hive dynamics interesting. I had no idea they were so brutal.

This book had a really interesting premise and I felt the tell-tale pull to read it when I was not able to, which is the mark, in my opinion, of success, at least in some aspects.

However, it felt very disorganized and unfocused in a lot of ways. The core of the plot could have been executed effectively in half the time it took to tell the whole story. As a result I did find myself trying to figure out what the goal of telling this story was several times. Without a central driving force, it was difficult to latch on to the story and get fully absorbed.

Overall, I really enjoyed this audiobook. The story follows Flora 717, a bee born outside of what is normal for a bee of her "station". Flora 717 is born a sanitation worker bee, which is the lowest job/station within the hive yet Flora 717 has abilities abnormal for a station worker, she can speak unlike other Floras, she can make flow, which feeds the Queen's babies, and is able to forage (fly and gather food for the hive). I found myself rooting for Flora throughout the story - I'm still unsure if it was because she was the "underdog" of the story or because of the underlined racism, sexism, and class-ism issues the bees represent but then this then also becomes a problem for me. All is all, I enjoyed the story.
