It was hard to get into but then I was hooked.
I enjoyed being part of a hive & getting to know more about bees & their ways. Would recommend this book if you’re tired about reading about humans.

I am not sure what to think about this book. On the one hand, I liked it. I did, it was interesting, it was a completely different perspective than I'm used to reading. It was in-depth, and engrossing, and the characters were feminist as hell (the male drones, though worshipped in times of plenty, are after all totally disposable when it comes to the good of the hive. And all other characters are female.)
But.
I just didn't love it. i found myself pushing for the end so that I could mark it finished, but not for any particular need to finish reading. The main character was strong and smart and headstrong, but I didn't really *care* about her. The plot was heavy and high-stakes and ever-changing, but I didn't really *care* about it. I enjoyed that many of the descriptions took advantage of often-ignored senses like taste and smell. But. The whole reading experience was very... removed. That's the only way I can describe it. Maybe it was something to do with the super-technical jargon, or the way everything was translated into bee-eez, but I just found myself not being able to connect to the story on any deep level, past the novelty that I was reading from the perspective of bees.

bees are so interesting. this book is really quite good. I recommend to anyone who likes bees, anyone who likes dystopian societies, anyone who likes animal tales and epic stories.

I really wanted to like this - it definitely had potential! Unfortunately the pacing was off for me and there were just so many crises that the final plot climax didn't feel very surprising or significant.

Dystopia meets The Bee Movie, and I say that in the most loving way possible.

I really wanted to like this, but as I've said previously I need to connect with books on an emotional level, and it proved to be impossible with this book. I think it was an interesting concept, but for me I just could not really see the point of the story.
