Recommended by my niece. I remember being her age and being really into sad, dramatic books like this one. Compelling story that I finished in one night.

I really enjoyed this book about a young teen named Heidi who lives with a mentally disabled mother and a neighbor/caregiver who doesn't leave the apartment next door except to come to theirs through a connecting opening. Heidi finds photos that give clues to her roots and sets off across the country by herself to find the truth about her mother and the one word her mother uses that she doesn't understand -- soof. It's very well-written, the characters well-drawn, and there are certainly thought-provoking situations for readers young and old. It is completely unrealistic if you stop and think about it, but satisfying to finish.

I loved this book. It was on my forgotten list of books to read but when I saw one of my 4th graders reading it I had to join in! It's a must read.

A great story about self-discovery, family and friends and the truth. I am looking forward to reading Soof to see what happens with Heidi and Bernadette!

My favorite book as a child. I remember reading this at age 6 or 7 and—without knowing the exact term—knew I was reading something different, something literary. It holds up, and it holds up well. A timeless story of discovery and familial understanding from a protagonist who is such a light.

I enjoyed this story very much. I was not expecting the ending and am not entirely sure I liked the ending. However, I would recommend this book to my students and love the messages to the reader.

I think this book was warm to read. A little boring at first but never the less captivating till the end, I gave 4 stars I think cause maybe i'm a little too old have read this book and maybe that's why I didn't find it as interesting in the beginning. Very sweet.
