To think I almost DNFed this after 50 pages!!! Which is why I deduct half a star. The first few chapters are really hard to read, they’re nonsensical, lazy world building and make almost zero sense to the point where I felt compelled to put it down. Some friends convinced me it was worth the push so I started over and pushed through part 1, at which point I absolutely *devoured* the rest of the book. I didn’t guess any of the twists, I fell in love with all the characters, my heart broke and pieced itself back together and broke over and over again. Loved this. ACOTAR who?

It is down to four stars for me due to the complexity of the world building; however, I will note that if you are a fan of anything like LoTR, you're going to the love this book and objectively from a writer's perspective the whole world is well conceptualized and deeply disturbing. Due to the sheer complexity of the world building though, Maas has to spend a lot of time dissecting world pieces and laying down complex story threads, which slows the pace of the novel significantly. I have ADHD; I regularly found myself getting confused with the amount of information getting covered and struggling to remember minor characters. If you hyperfixate on high fantasy you'll love it; I would just not rate it as an exceptionally executive function friendly book.
Graphic: Grief, Slavery, and Body horror
Moderate: Fire/Fire injury, Drug use, Gun violence, Suicide attempt, Murder, Suicidal thoughts, Mental illness, and Violence
Minor: Self harm
Slavery: institutionalized slavery is inherent in the world building. Multiple major and minor characters are enslaved throughout the book. Body horror:sooaery's review against another edition

Original review:
Honestly i was bored for a good chunk. Not bored-bored but I kept having to encourage myself knowing that SJM likes to make her books bottom heavy. The last 200 pages or so were worth it, but man is it a slog. I feel like we could have shaved off 200-250 pages and still told the same story and built the same world.
Speaking of world building, it’s a neat contrast from the usual “medieval-like” fantasy worlds a lot of fantasy takes place in. The modern aspects matched with interesting, unique character traits do buoy this book and potentially the series.
