I'm not without criticisms of this book, but I really liked it. It's a bdsm romance that gets that people are human and fallible. These characters do a lot of stupid stuff, aren't always model scenesters, and certainly are better at bondage than they are at emotions.
There are examples of boundary-crossing, miscommunication, bondage gone very wrong, and not-well-handled poly in this book. All of the characters are doing their best, coming from a variety of perspectives and histories, and they all feel real to me. Despite all the bad stuff they deal with, there's an incredible amount of sweetness and fluff in this series. It's very fun especially if you have some familiarity with the scene. I found the variety of reasons why people are into this stuff, the variety of things they do, and the recognition that a lot of this is sex nerdery really refreshing.
The art comes across as a bit on the male gaze side of things, but it wasn't too much that it turned me off, and Sejic clearly has invested a lot of care and nuance into these characters. His facility with facial expressions is one of my favorite parts of this comic, and there are some incredibly gorgeous pages in here.

loved it... I'm usually not into erotica but the mix of romance and comedy just brought everything together. Ally is so adorable and Lisa is relateable.
3.5
Ok, so I read this.
I thought it was fun and cute, and the art is great, so I am giving it a good rating.
But ultimately, this is just very very very not my thing, so I probably won't be continuing on with the series.

I pride myself on being a "sex-nerd." This is, in case the reader is unfamiliar, an individual who collects books about the human sexual condition, reads endlessly about the variety of ways that human beings have sex, thinks a lot about what sex has meant culturally and the way it has been incorporated into language, art, and philosophy, and finally someone who just enjoys sex period. Most of my library is dedicated to human sexuality, yet for all my studies "kink" is most noticeably absent and that is largely because I like many people did not possess a clear understanding of what it actually was. Like so many I pictured big busted women packed into black leather and bearing riding crops, and while that is most certainly present in some parts of the BDSM community, Sunstone was a reminder that Domination and submission if far more complicated. Like every sexual dynamic in life it comes down to the people inhabited and performing this display.
Sunstone isn't just a defense of kink, it's a sweet love story about two women who find in each other not just sexual satisfaction, but personal and emotional fulfillment. Sunstone is very much a graphic novel loaded with kinky lesbian buds sex, but it's also about the strange and wonderful sensation of finding, meeting, and falling for someone who "gets you."

Beautiful artwork and a fun storyline. It's been cool to see these characters and their story develop.
Liked the character art, which was the reason this was on my to-read list. Story was underwhelming even though the couple was cute. I found the framing story unnecessary, and there was a little too much talking head action going on. Too many panels got packed onto a page vertically in a lot of spots, making the panels need to be short. There were also a ton of extras at the back, which I know some others love, but the story itself felt very short compared to the book's thickness.
“People are complex. You usually see one side of them… On any given day they armor up to meet society. The society that loves branding its members.”
When it comes to characters, themes and digging deeper... no one does it better than Stjepan.

While I know next-to-nothing about the BDSM community, this did feel like a really positive portrayal of it. I love the characters and the banter, and I'll be interested to see where it goes as it really starts to take off.
The only detractor for me was a personal one. I really like Sejic's style overall--he has been my favorite Rat Queens artist--but for such a sex-positive series as this, I kinda wish Ally and Lisa had more realistic body types. They seem a bit...porn-y? Also, I'm glad Ally thinks Lisa's lip-biting is cute, but it is starting to get on my last nerve.
Small qualms. This is awesome.
