Night Bane picks up right where Lightlark left off and dives deeper into the web of power, betrayal and hidden secrets. This book really digs into Isla’s past and the complicated and messy relationship she has with Grimm. I absolutely loved the flashbacks in this book. They gave so much more insight into their shared history, helping to understand Isla’s character on a deeper level, as well as the roots of her bond with Grimm. Honestly, I felt like I saw them in a whole new light, and it just made their connection feel so much more intense and real.

What really stood out to me in this book is how much smoother it was compared to the first one. I’m not sure if it’s because I was more familiar with the world now, or because the stakes feel even higher but I definitely found myself pulled into the story much quicker. Isla’s journey feels like it’s constantly shifting between trust, loyalty and growing into her true power. The alliances are never clear and every decision feels like it could have massive consequences, but honestly I was so hooked the moment I started reading.

When it comes to Isla and Grimm, I am all in! Partially because I’ve got a serious soft spot for Grimm. He’s layered, conflicted and has this charm that just keeps you wanting to see more of him. The somnewhat enemies to lovers vibe was perfectly executed. It’s filled with tension and the way their past is woven into the present just adds even more weight to every interaction between them. If Isla doesn’t end up with Grimm, I might just go full villain mode because let’s be real, he’s the one true choice!

Oro, in contrast serves as the more “safe” choice, he’s charming, protective and perhaps even a bit too perfect? While there are moments where his care for Isla was evident, he doesn’t have the same depth or complexity as Grimm. His motivations felt more predictable and his role in the story starts to feel a bit one dimensional compared to Grimm’s character. While Isla’s feelings for him are clear in this book, it’s hard to root for him as much as you do for Grimm, especially when their shared history seems to lack the emotional weight that Isla and Grimm’s relationship holds.

The plot twists in Night Bane are timed perfectly and just when you think you have a handle on things, another revelation shakes things up. The stakes are definitely higher and the emotional moments hit harder than in the first book. Aster’s created a world where trust is fragile, and loyalties shift constantly and it keeps you wanting to know how it ends.

In the end, Night Bane is such a strong follow up. The tension between Isla and Grimm is still the driving force for me, but the plot twists and surprises keep me coming back for more. I’m already on the edge of my seat, waiting for the next book!

I enjoyed this book significantly more than the first book. Given how it ended, I knew I needed to continue on with the series. The back and forth between the past and present was a little confusing. But I found myself preferring the chapters based out of the past. The world building/background was more flushed out in this book than the previous one. Normally my reviews are long, but I just finished this book five minutes ago and I feel so torn. I go back and forth between who I want the love interest to be, but the ending was… wow
