I wasn't really cool with the way trauma and gun violence was portrayed in this. The only thing I really enjoyed was the music festival aspect

So this sophomore novel of Leah Johnson's writing felt similar to her first book. I def think this was made for the high school/ possibly young college freshman in mind. The actual story and writing itself were great. Two girls at a music festival in Georgia before they counter another year of academia. A contest where the prize is a winning car? Sounds like a cute summer read (which this did turn out to be, with a couple of heavy doses of seriousness in between.) Toni and Olivia held up well enough on their own although I favored Toni more if I had to choose between the two. I did wish their love story had a little more fleshing out (maybe have the two hang out post festival?)I do think roughly the last 3/4 ish wrapped up a little too cleanly but there is a HEA (happily ever after) at the end.

Felt a little superficial. Most of the plot happened in the last 80-ish pages and the rest kinda felt like filler. It was fine imo. Not badly written, but nothing special. It took me a while to figure out why I felt something was off and in my opinion, this books should have been written from Imani's POV. I think that would have made it more interesting. Mostly couldn't get into it I think because the characters weren't relatable for me. But that's a me problem.
