I stumbled across a copy of this book at a library book sale and picked it up out of nostalgia for Hilary Duff.
"Elixir" follows Clea: a teenaged girl who has been in the spotlight her entire life because of her parents. Her father was a renowned surgeon, and her mom is a very successful politician in Washington D.C. Clea herself has started to build a career as a photojournalist under a pseudonym. When Clea gets the opportunity to take a job in the remote country her father disappeared in, she cannot wait to finally get answers to why he disappeared.
This book was very fine. I did not have high expectations, and I was not impressed, but I have a very fine time reading this story. Clea reads very much like a teenager who does not know how the world works yet, but who is granted opportunities most adults will never have. She has a great inner circle, with an eclectic best friend that is loud, but loyal. Clea falls in love with someone and almost immediately cannot imagine life without him. A love triangle develops. This is the cliche young adult book.
Because Clea's father disappeared years ago, and there have been no leads as to what happened to him, there is a bit of mystery with this story. Additionally, there is a mystery person that keeps showing up in Clea's pictures. This book does end with a pretty big cliffhanger, and we are left without a lot of conclusions.
Will I pick up the sequel? Perhaps one day.
