It's a retelling of Lord of the Rings from the viewpoint of the antagonist. I just found the reading too dense and uninteresting

A deliberately derivative mythology that has remarkable, unique elements of its own; a shadow tale of the Tolkien quest that gives us the hearts and minds of every side, most significantly that of the Enemy. This is a heavy, portentous read that nonetheless carries you along, aching all the while.
This chapter broke my heart.

OMG!! I was worried that I was still gonna be bored by Tanaros, but the end of this story was amazing and a huge punch in the gut at the same time. Carey never lets me down....she just hurts me sometimes on the way there.

I was a little disappointed. The first book was marvelous, this one was maybe 3.5 stars. Still enjoyed it but the pacing was out in places and some characters seemed to be just thrown away.

Jacqueline Carey is an amazing writer! The Sundering is a beautiful two-part series.
