A very strong debut and first book in a series from a New Zealand author. My attention was drawn to this following CoNZealand, which (with mixed success, admittedly) did manage to highlight some great New Zealand authors and works in the SFF space, at least to me. My library had the first two of this series (I've requested they buy the third) and I'm hooked. The character work is so strong, especially the female lead, and I also love the setting. Would also be a great introduction to adult fantasy for those who have read primarily from YA.

DID NOT FINISH: 30%

I'd heard good things about The Lord of Stariel , but ended up DNFing at the 30% mark. The set up was intriguing - unique setting, diverse cast of characters, and a (somewhat) sexually liberated FMC with an independent streak. Sadly, nothing much happened, Even after The Choosing, it was back to dull and boring. I wasn't interested in the love triangle and without having finished the book, I can tell you now that
Wyn is one of the fae. I mean come one, he shows up mysteriously out of the blue one day?
. As long as this book was, I can't imagine slogging through four more books in the series. I may be missing out, but I'm not going to lose any sleep over it.
No rating due to DNF.

Wholesome story.
