This book was charming, in a quirky sort of way, and it offered a magical system that felt new and engaging. I loved all the side characters, Hetta is charming and just down to earth and realistic enough to avoid all the usual fantasy novel heroine cliches, and the plot is solid, although I did figure out the culprit in the mystery about a quarter of the way in. It is, at times, a little slow, and predictable, but it's a fun setting with great characters.

*3.5*

The story moved quickly enough that it kept me reading, but I knew who had set all of the *human* events rolling halfway through the book even though the author didn’t “reveal” it until the book was almost over

I enjoyed the strong female character standing up for herself and thoes she loves. The magic system is interesting, and the family dynamic is a bit of a mess but the base of it is loyalty and duty.

Quite solid first in a series. Hetta is a delight.
