Well, I have a new favorite author, and maybe a new favorite genre in comedic essays. The audiobook version of “Wow, No Thank You.” was absolutely the right choice for me - listening to Samantha Irby’s narration feels like chatting with a very funny friend after a long day.

I genuinely think almost every part of this book is great, but a few highlights for me: The chapter about the difficulty/awkwardness of trying to make friends and impress people as an adult, and embarrassing yourself so badly you want to melt into the floor, is particularly relatable to me. I also really appreciate her hilarious and blunt honesty about her medical issues throughout the book. Talking about bodies being painful and/or doing gross things is something I personally think should be normalized, so it was refreshing to hear someone else do it out loud, and without hesitation!

I think the only part of this book I don’t love is chapter 8, i.e. the “sure, sex is fun, but...” chapter. I still think it’s funny, and that particular chapter may have worked better for me in a physical or ebook format, but hearing that phrase over and over via audiobook was a lot for me. I do want to give Irby credit for saying it with different inflections to try to make it sound a little less repetitive, though!

I can’t stress enough how excited I am to have found this writer via perusing the prompt lists for #thediversebaseline challenge (run by @bookish.millennial and @themargherita.s), and that I have three more books of hers ahead of me. I read this for April’s “book by a BIPOC author about chronic illness/pain” prompt. Listening to a few hours each night for the past week has been a really nice way for me to spend time with myself and laugh out loud.

Samantha Irby is back again with new essays featuring sex, bodily fluids, marriage, and more.

I just adore Samantha Irby and her voice so I was excited to see a brand-new book by her featuring another cute animal, this time an adorable bunny that just had me reach out and want to hug it. Of course I had to pre-order it so I could read it whenever Amazon decided to send it to me.

In this one we have a whole lot of new essays to read. Featuring marriage (and hilarious questions and Irby's answers but also talk about her wife and children), bodily fluids (but we all know that she writes about that a lot), how to publish a book/get a show (which was very much fun to read and I laughed), about your body (and how much effort you really have to do to get it perfect), cats and dogs, going partying, about her past. And there is more. There were a few parts that had me cringing (some of the sex parts especially those about anal and then there was the period chapter). But there were also parts that were relatable and tons of parts that had me giggling and laughing.

I am glad that we saw some more of her life with her wife and the kids. We read so much about herself and her past and what she does and it makes me happy we see another important part in her life. Hope this makes sense, sorry, really tired but still want to write reviews.

I skipped one chapter after 3 pages and that was the Sure, Sex is great chapter. Which just got annoying and boring after 3 pages. Not to mention that I just forgot what the previous sentence was.

There was just one thing that was a bit of a shame, and that was that the book felt really slow and at times I just got a bit bored, normally I get through a book this size in a few hours, but now it took several sessions and also some motivational Netflix to get through it. I still very much enjoyed reading the book but I am just sad that I had a hard time getting through it.

But all in all, I would recommend this book to all and I cannot wait what Samantha Irby will write about next.

Absolutely hysterical. Super gross and over the top, but I laughed out loud many times. She is just so goddamn honest about everything-- especially bodily functions. We read this with my book club and will discuss this week. I'm hoping everyone enjoyed it, but regardless, I'll be reading all her other work asap. I've been meaning to read Lindy West for awhile, too, so diving into her book and TV show now. (Irby and West are buddies and Irby wrote for Shrill.)

UPDATE: Those folks mid-50s and older in our book group hated this book! The number of f***s and other cuss words seemed to upset them the most, though they had a hard time relating to some of the subject matter (the mix tape essay, in particular). Regardless of age, though, everyone related to and loved the essay "Body Negativity"!

Once again, Samantha Irby has a lot of very important, very hilarious messages to share. Also, discovering that she wrote one of my favorite tv episodes in cinematic history was a great way to end my weekend.

Funny, real, raw. Feels like indulging in a conversation with a friend, especially when no topic is ever too sacred for Sam.
