Nature's Year in the Kawarthas contains a wealth of information about the seasonal changes of the region.  There is one chapter per month, and each chapter is divided into sections including mammals, birds, insects and other invertebrates, amphibians and reptiles, fish, plants, weather, and night sky.  For each of these groups of flora / fauna / natural phenomena, Monkman details what one can observe in the given month: migrations, mating seasons, blooms, average temperatures, etc.  I spent a full year reading this book, reading the relevant chapter very early in the month then looking to observe what I could throughout the month -- I would recommend this approach, though certainly one could certainly read the book cover to cover much more quickly.  If I had to offer a criticism, the print quality is a little inconsistent, with the black font appearing grey in some places and some of the illustrations not being the clearest.  Highly, highly recommend to anyone living in, visiting, or interested in the Kawartha Lakes region -- I wish every region had a book like this one.
