This was a re-read for me. I've read this series back in the beginning of 2000s. I'm not sure if my taste has changed or just that I've read so many good books since reading this, but when Audible had this for free as a part of my membership I remembered liking the books and decided to listen to them, and I did not enjoy. The main character is ditzy and there is almost NO character development of any character except the main character, and even her development is choppy and not great. I couldn't get through it. Too many books, so little time. No reason to force my way through something I'm not enjoying.

Read this book a few years ago and didn't like it. I wish I could go back and bonk my past self on the head with a copy of this book.

I watched True Blood years ago and liked the show, so I thought I'd give the books a shot. Life-changing, groundbreaking literary genius it is not. But an enjoyable, a little sexy, breezy read? Yes. Yes, it is.

I like Sookie. She's a little ditzy but not a ditz and both strong and vulnerable, a combination a lot of young women can relate to.

I like the element of Urban (well, rural, but that's not the genre) Fantasy.

This isn't on my all-time-favorites list, but I plan to stick with the whole series. I'd say that's a pretty solid endorsement.

Dead Until Dark is the first of the ten Sookie Stackhouse novels out there at the moment. Sookie is a young and pretty waitress, who works at a bar. She can read minds, which causes Sookie to sometimes appear crazy. When Bill walks in the bar, she instantly knows he's a vampire - and she can't hear his thoughts.

The book is the first adult vampire novel I've read and I have to say that I was disappointed. I expected a lot of this book since I hear lots and lots of people say good things about it. I ordered the box set for under € 25 so it's a steal at € 2.50 a book, but I don't know if I would have read any further if I only bought the first book.

This is my problem: there is a lot going on in the book. There's a mindreader as a main character, which should give some interesting stories. There's a vampire (well, more than one). There's a murderer on the loose who kills Sookie's coworker. And there's even more going on - but I won't tell it, so I won't spoil it for you if you're planning on reading it. What I'm saying is that there is so much going on, that it couldn't possibly be boring. But yet, that's exactly what it is. Charlaine Harris may have written a bestseller (series), but I couldn't really be taken in by the story. It dragged on too long - and that's with all the mysteries, action and the, eh, other things going on in the book. I was really disappointed. Most of the characters were really flat as well. That's usually not really a problem, but some flat characters have a role that's interesting to read and I couldn't figure out who said what, because I couldn't see the difference between the characters.

Having said that (Hi, Simon Cowell!), I did finish this book rather quickly and I sortof enjoyed myself. I think. I still want to read the next book, and since I have the whole box, I'll probably end up reading the whole series anyway, but I didn't think this was a good book.

My overall rating: 3 out of 5 stars (2,5 stars to be exact)

Giving the benefit of the doubt - three stars. Honestly, it hoovers between two and three stars, so consider yourself lucky, Dead Until Dark. I really hope the story gets better!

Stacy was right, this book is awesome and extremely addictive. I rarely buy books anymore, I usually always borrow them from the library, but when I saw there were 25 holds on the second book in this series, I immediately went out and bought it. There was no way in hell I was going to be able to wait that long. And I never watched the series on HBO, but now I will definitely have to.

Sookie Stackhouse is a waitress in Louisiana with the gift of being able to read minds. Vampires are "out of the coffin" and able to survive on synthetic blood which is served up just about everywhere. One comes into her bar, one thing leads to another, and they start seeing one another. Meanwhile, mysterious murders have taken hold of her small town.

The premise sounded silly to me, but I really enjoyed this book. Bill is smoking hot, but I can't deal with his name, being that it is also my father's and my father is the farthest thing from a super suave, sex vampire. Ew.
