I loved this book. The writing was great & the plot kept me engaged. The problem was the stereotypical “bad” people.
Making the only gay character(s?- Leif?) gay, the pissy, rude women fat or consistently pointing out their huge mole that made them ugly, etc.) Also, the way Ava Shay just doesn’t get any real inner turmoil about being raped in general, let alone the ruler of the invading army. Killing Shawcroft after he basically just became good or useful in Nail’s eyes. Making a poor pony fall down a cavern? It just felt like he was killing off the teenage characters so there’d be less people to trek across Gul Kana.
Graphic: Grief, Cursing, Violence, War, Death, Murder, and Gore
Moderate: Confinement, Fire/Fire injury, Rape, Torture, and Vomit
Minor: Animal death

Not being a big fan of grimdark fantasy I went into The Forgetting Moon almost completely blind and without very high expectations but, I'm happy to say I was pleasently surprised. Only after finishing it did I realise this is debut novel and that is really impressive.
This is a very dark, gritty and violent world. The stakes feel very high, the plot is full of political intrigue, religious conflicts, mistery, prophecies, betrayals and so much more.
There's a vast cast of characters that sometimes can be confusing but overall the characterization is so well done and all the POV's are very interesting and engaging. My only complaint about the characters is our portagonist Nail. He can come across as whiny, bland and not very likeable but I'm sure he's going to have an amazing arc in the upcoming instalements.
I think it's also important to mention that this is a 800 pages epic fantasy book and it didn't feel slow or that it was dragging at all. At the same time, I can see some people having issues with the writting style that in some instances can be very descriptive (without being flowery) and repetitive.
I'd recommend this book to all epic fantasy fans out there and I'm excited to pick up the sequel!
