This was fun! It doesn’t do a lot to kickstart this new prequel era of The High Republic—although that could change with hindsight—but it’s a rock-solid adventure with some strong characters and exciting action. The cast might be a little too large for its own good, especially considering how speedy the plot is, but the cast is likable and easy to root for. They never come off as too shallow or trite, either, which I sometimes worry about with these Middle-Grade titles. George Man’s writing is quite good, too. It’s age-appropriate, of course, yet injects the plot with stakes (and some shades of light horror!) that carry genuine weight. Good read!
Moderate: Violence
Minor: Terminal illness, Death, and Child death
