Oh we’ve kissed and now we love each other. 🙄 I didn’t expect much from a novella and I more or less knew what I was getting having read Owen’s book prior to this. But it was fine.

Reading this so soon on the heels of [b:Lessons from a Scandalous Bride|12985343|Lessons from a Scandalous Bride (Forgotten Princesses #2)|Sophie Jordan|https://d.gr-assets.com/books/1331923466s/12985343.jpg|18144827], it was fairly easy to see that the author uses the same formula for each of the books and merely switches out the characters. This novella was to set the stage for meeting the hero of the next book in the series, Owen. Although he is conspicuously absent from this story, he is somewhat of "the elephant in the room" as the two main characters move from apathy or loathing to lust, which is quickly declared to be love so that the main characters can marry, as that is what all the heroines seem to desire above all else. Yet, for them to so quickly jump from lust to love makes me doubt that they, and by a certain extension, the author, know what that emotion truly is or entails. I did enjoy reading the book, as it whiled away a Sunday evening, but it wasn't a "really like it" kind of book. I've read better historical romances that have taken the time to develop the chase and the feelings for one another that this series seems to lack. I'll ultimately finish the series, but I regret the money spent on it and will likely consign it to the "deleted off the Kindle and better left forgotten" shelf.

This short novella was my first Sophie Jordan read, after finishing it, I promptly requested a few others from my public library. I loved this novella! There are a lot of novellas out there and I don’t think that all authors can pull them off, but like Eloisa James’ novellas, I found that Jordan rocked the novella format. In such a short period, Jordan was able to convey a realistic relationship between two people. Granted that Paget and Jamie had a history, as they knew each other in childhood, but I think this is one of the only ways that romantic novellas work, in terms of creating a realistic relationship.

Jamie and Paget were somewhat enemies when they were children. Jamie was the quiet, serious and arrogant middle brother, and Paget was a bubbly, fun girl that loved to tag along with Jamie’s other brothers. In fact, everyone always assumed that Paget would marry the youngest brother, Owen, when he returned from war. However, the death of the eldest brother has brought Jamie home to assume the role of Earl, forcing Paget to consider the truth of her feelings for Owen – she doesn’t want to marry him and she never felt as attracted to Owen as she does Jaime. At the same time, Jamie has to deal with the guilt he feels for wanting Paget knowing that his younger brother deserves her. Caught in a kiss at the Valentine’s ball forces both Jamie and Paget to make some serious decisions about their relationship.

This novella was great! Too short, but still a quick and adorable read. I’m glad to have been able to read it and I look forward to reading more of Jordan’s historical romances.

Very satisfying, long-enough, short-enough.
It introduced main as well as side characters (I have not read other books in this series)
Kept me interested not only in the steamy parts, which I found joufully steamy and satisfying, that did not end abruptly, instead were quite well...explored ^.^
An enjoyable read, wants me to read more of this author.

Unlike the full length novels in this series, I adored this novella. The main character was sweet and the hero was passably flawed without becoming atrocious. I didn’t love the premise as much as the characters, and I do think the novella suffered for its lead-in to the next book. But overall, I enjoyed the story and that it was a quick read.

This was a charming, delightful quick read about Paget, the daughter of a vicar, and Jamie, the new Earl of Winnigham. Paget always thought she would marry Jamie's younger brother but with Owen off to war, she has come to realize her feelings are more platonic. Jamie is suddenly stirring up new feelings that she never thought she could feel for this cold, uptight man. Jamie knows that Paget belongs to Owen, even though there is no formal engagement, but with his new, unexpected duties, the girl from his childhood is beckoning to him, making him rethink his views of her just being a lowly vicars daughter.

Even though this is short, it packs quite a bit into the story. Jamie always felt like an outcast amongst his brothers and Paget, envied their easy companionship and it has made Paget disregard him. However, there is a spark that flares from Paget's bold treatment of Jamie and it was a pleasure watching Jamie uncover his true feelings and show a more softer side. I did feel like the "I love yous" were a bit quick and easy but that comes with the shorter length. This was a very appetizing story that has really piqued my interest in Owens story, which is next in this series, [b:How to Lose a Bride in One Night|16065425|How to Lose a Bride in One Night (Forgotten Princesses, #3)|Sophie Jordan|http://d.gr-assets.com/books/1359004390s/16065425.jpg|21856058] and I know I will be reading it to see how he deals with this turn of events! For a quick, emotionally satisfying romance with a dash of heat, this one is a solid choice. 3 1/2 stars
