Emily is a hospice nurse—a strenuous and stressful job even in the best of times. But Emily doesn’t work at a normal hospice. She helps patients with end of life care, but also with afterlife death care. Emily’s patients are zombies.

Don’t call them zombies, though. They are guests of the hospice. They’ve been awarded dignity through tireless efforts of grassroots organizations. People don’t like it, though. In fact, Emily passes protestors every time she walks into the hospice.

Where the Dead Go to Die follows Emily and her 10-year-old daughter as they settle into their lives. We visit Emily and Lucette seven years earlier, where we learn about the beginnings of this epidemic. Dries and Gunnells have meshed perfectly and created a harrowing and terrifying story. This book was published in 2016; reading this in the time of Covid-19 is really shocking.

CW for dead animals, rape, pedophilia, gore/blood, death, chronic illness/hospital setting, and gun violence

This book may have been written in 2016, but it's eerie how many parallels can be drawn between the book and the last 2 years.

Like so many great horror stories, it was the human tragedy in this which has made it memorable for this reader. The twist on zombies was inventive (and horrible) and the characters believable and sympathetic. It will linger with me for some time.

A fun, new twist on the zombie trope. This book reminded me of a movie where everything is gray and moving in slow motion but then it speeds up at the end and everyone is screaming and everything is on fire.

This isnt a fast paced typical zombie story where brains are the main focal point. It's a much more human story that is very relevant to society today. A great, quick read for a cold winter night.

In some ways, this book is beautifully written. The reader cares about the characters. But, the first 80% of the story was so slow that I almost gave up. I am glad I didn't because that last 20% was wonderful. My rating is 3.5 stars rounded down because it shouldn't take 4/5 of the book to get good.

Nothing like a zombie novel with heart to get your blood pumping on a cold day!

Oooph. WHERE THE DEAD GO TO DIE is a touching story about what happens after the zombie apocalypse and a mother's love.

Hospice care for zombies/smilers was a new concept for me, but I could see it happening; protesters and all. The illustrations really help bring the chills to life. I'd recommend this short book to anyone who enjoys zombie fiction.

I only wish I could have learned more about some of the characters and the beginnings of zombieness was explained.
