Perhaps I left reading this too late - the points felt obvious and a little pithy. For example, the suggestion that we need to listen more didn't delve into the obstacles that prevent either side of an argument from debating in good faith. If you are of the opinion, for example, that one country shouldn't bomb another while your opponent believes vehemently that country should bomb every inch of the other, the compromise of 'you can bomb some of it' is hardly equal - and unfortunately it feels like this is where our 'age of division' is sat.

It's sort of... the book/pamphlet version of that "Imagine" video the celebs did during Covid. The intention was nice but maybe not the best execution.

Again, entirely open to the suggestion that this is due to reading it in 2024 after many of Shafak's same points have been made by many others.

This was a short and impactful read. The ideas presented in this essay were not new but it’s good to be reminded of how we are all interconnected, especially in the post-modern age where individualism seems to be revered more than ever. The culture, language, politics, and consciousness of everyone needs to be acknowledged— that it will always be a collective experience. For us to truly progress, we need a healthy amount of anger mixed with collective anxiety and empathy.
