This isn't my normal type of read, so I'm not sure how to review it. I think I'll go with bullets:
  • I would solidly put this in the "erotica" camp, not the romance. No judgment, just an FYI.
  • While not all of the sexually explicit scenes were my *taste,* I am sort of in awe at Simone's ability to write those scenes in a way that is at once completely absorbing and also educating. She realizes it's worth it to explain what's actually going on between the two characters, rather that just jumping into the action and letting readers draw their own conclusions.
  • I read this book because a friend of mine read it and said she found it "healing," given the purity culture she grew up in. I was also raised in toxic Christian purity culture, so that made me curious. And I know exactly what she meant. Even if I don't agree with all of the religious/theological conclusions in the book, it was SO incredibly healing to read a story where a religious person was struggling with sex, but never because it was "dirty" or "wrong."
  • The writing is actually quite good. I wish there was more to the scenes in between the sexual encounters, but I enjoyed Simone's writing style nonetheless.

How am I giving this book 5 stars?! How did the author manage to make this book so complicated?!

I'm still gathering my thoughts. I loved it right down to the last chapter.

Update:
Alright, back to it. I'm not gonna lie, I need Jesus right now, though I think that would be even more awkward given what I just read and how far from God it took me. Honestly, one of the best spicy books I've ever read.
Seriously: Spice 11/10, chef's kiss.

Aside from the fact that it's one of the hottest books in the history of my reads, I really enjoyed the spiritual themes and Tyler's reflection of God. I'm personally no longer a Catholic, but the way Tyler put it in a more generally spiritual way instead of so much biblically-ish actually resounded with a lot of my own views on spirituality and faith.

Additionally, I loved that this was written in Tyler's POV, I love me a good old angsty male romantic interest that gets me going and to be able to read his most inner thoughts. And of course, to enjoy his pleasure through his eyes.

So, all in all, this was well on its way to be among the elite 5-star smutty reads on my shelves, and then the last chapter happened.
I can't even.
I want to say this as gently as possible because I did love it, but that stupid reason for their time apart is utter bullshit and I really HATE a misscommunication trope!
It was a 5 star until that and I'm really struggling with what to do about it. I hated it! But I really really loved the rest of it, so I'm angry and hurt and confused and goddammit this fucking book toyed with perfection and then shattered my hopes in the most bullshitty way ever!

But yes, of course I'll continue with the series. What else is a poor smut-starved lamb to do?

I think this book was just not for me. I really wanted to enjoy it, but having the vast majority of the book told from Tyler's perspective kind of threw me off I think.
