If you are a longtime fan of the Lore podcast you will find the stories very familiar. They are just as delightful to read as they were to listen to. Mahnke has a gentle, respectful approach to talking about many of the stories that inspired the stories that scare us today. The humor within is often light and balances the heaviness of the tales quite well. I did not find any discussion of mental illness to be done in poor taste even though we know how inaccurate historical understanding of such things was.
