A very fun, dark, and interesting read. The characters relationships are pretty complicated, and at times make you want to scream out of frustration.

The MC at the beginning is a complete bastard, but overtime you can see how he is changing.

This is my first time reading such a story, and while not what I expected I definitely enjoyed turning each page. There are definitely adult themes in the story, it is maybe teenager friendly, but the story was otherwise engaging; rich in mythos, the story has the characters in a world that can easily confuse the reader if they are not somewhat familiar with the mythology. The romance itself seemed to fall a little flat, so I won't be grabbing the sequel, but that may be the norm for this series and simply doesn't jive with me.

Definitely an interesting and enjoyable read, I would recommend getting a physical copy of the book so you can enjoy the artwork within!

“And so the white cat knelt all night, never turning around.
And so the dumb dog stood all night, never once leaving.”

*whispering* Mo Ran, you idiot-

By the way, Chu Wanning is a bae. My new favorite martyr.

Oh, and the ending was freaking cruel. Anyway, thanks for the pain, I'm looking forward to the next volume.

i’ll be honest, i was skeptical at first but it’s actually very good! i enjoyed reading this immensely. i love the humour of the writing, even if a lot of it is over-the-too and reads like it was written on crack, but it has its moments. plus now i finally get why the author’s pen name is what it is!

i still don’t understand why everyone in the novel acts like chu wanning is the absolute worst, like yeah he’s unsociable and short-tempered but at least he has a strong sense of morality and actually does care for people. so. other thoughts is that mo fan seems to be very emotionally unintelligent. poor guy just can’t seem to understand himself at all. i’m looking forward to reading the second book!
