The author wrote the most tragic scenes (remember: yes, it can and wil always get worse), but will make up for it with comedy and romantic bits that made me want to run up my walls because I want what they have (minus the suffering). If you don't mind the triggers, please do yourself a favor and give Mo Ran and Chu Wanning a chance!

The MC is absolutely a terrible person and most of the characters aren't much better (except Shi Mei, bless him). I don't wanna give spoilers, but if you read through the content warnings, you're basically reading a list of the protagonist's misdeeds.
The main plot is that the MC is reborn and has the chance to redo his life, so I'm very curious to see if that's actually possible. Can he go in a better direction? If yes, does that erase his past crimes? How much can truly be forgiven?
I think I would enjoy this story more if the main relationships were more healthy. The plot and themes have kept me very invested, but oh my god, I don't know if I could ever recommend this book because a large part is romance, but it's sooo problematic. The title alone indicates a relationship between a student and teacher (a disciple and master/Shizun), and in this first book, there is such a huge age gap and it's honestly very yikes.
I honestly don't know what to rate this cuz it's awful but also really well-written and I couldn't look away??!? I think I'll give it a 3.5 for now, but that may change. 😅

That said, I still read this 480 page book in just a couple of days and fell in love with the really well done characters, despite their cruelty.
Be warned: This book is sometimes really dark.
Moderate: Rape and Suicide
Minor: Acephobia/Arophobia

i still don’t understand why everyone in the novel acts like chu wanning is the absolute worst, like yeah he’s unsociable and short-tempered but at least he has a strong sense of morality and actually does care for people. so. other thoughts is that mo fan seems to be very emotionally unintelligent. poor guy just can’t seem to understand himself at all. i’m looking forward to reading the second book!
